Great for teaching English!,

I just returned from Mongolia, where a group was teaching English to the Mongolian children. This was a very valuable tool both for both in-class instruction and indepenent study. The real test is that the New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual version) was a real hit with the kids!

The new oxford picture dictionary,
By Aurora Huerta (US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual English Edition) (Paperback)
I have been teaching ESL to Spanish-speaking people for over 6 years and this has been a very useful aid in teaching. Now that I am teaching Spanish to English-speakers it is not as useful as it is when I teach English. Spanish words are not updated and I always have to change at least three words per page.

Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish,
By
This review is from: The New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual English Edition) (Paperback)
I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.
This is not a good book for young children - too many things to look at on one page...EXCELLENT resource for adults and teens, though, who are eager to increase vocabulary and are confident with pronunciation. I use it a lot in my Spanish classes, and even as a reference, when wanting to boost the vocabulary list for the week. For the younger child learning Spanish, try Flip Flop Spanish, which comes with a CD. Or Al reves ingles - which will be out shortly.

I use this book a lot even for adult ESL students. I find this a great resource for one of the basic ESL techniques--describe the picture. I've also used the verb pages to practice tenses. Pages on prepositions are also very good. The pictures are clear and easy to understand.

I still like the original better, but the New Oxford Picture Dictionary is a good resource and is on my list of recommended visual dictionaries.

The New Oxford picture dictionaries are a wonderful resource for English learners. Even using the dictionary with English-only, the images are so clear and the arrangement of the sets of vocabulary so logical that a beginner can quickly find words. If non-readers need to communicate, the picture dictionary is still a great help: all they have to do is point to the picture. We work with newly arrived refugees - I wish there was an inexpensive version of the various New Oxford picture dictionaries so we could give one to each family.

Teaching ESL,
This review is from: The New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual English Edition) (Paperback)
I have used this edition for several years with my students with the matching workbook. It is an excellent tool for teaching students whose first language is Spanish. It helped my students to improve social language and item recognition in both English and Spanish.

The pictures are nice because they're categorized. For example, there will be a page of types of boats and things related to a lake. There is a small word bank at the bottom of each page that labels the objects in the picture.
I would recommend using this with struggling readers, specifically students who are learning English as a second language and deaf/hard of hearing students.
