In The Oxford Spanish Dictionary, Oxford University Press is pleased to offer a major new bilingual reference for 1994. Based on an intensive research project lasting over eight years, The Oxford Spanish sets a new standard as one of the most authoritative--and useful--foreign language dictionaries available today.
For almost a decade, editors Beatriz Jarman and Roy Russell have led an outstanding team of Spanish and English lexicographers as they amassed the most inclusive and up-to-date Spanish dictionary ever published. They have painstakingly investigated vocabulary, meanings, and grammatical information, providing a work of unprecedented scope that reflects how both languages are spoken and written in all contexts--from literature to informal speech to technical publications. Drawing on expertise from the United States, Latin America, Great Britain, and Spain, the dictionary offers a truly comprehensive lexicon--useful from Kansas City to Caracas, from Manchester to Madrid, from San Francisco to San Juan.
The Oxford Spanish Dictionary offers the highest standards:

DL More than 250,000 words and phrases

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Outstanding reference work; particularly good for synonyms. Correspondence formats and examples are also very helpful."--William Forbes, University of New Hampshire

"An excellent, up-to-date dictionary for all users."--James A. Cummins, Professor of Spanish, Westminster College

"The Oxford Spanish Dictionary is without a doubt the best dictionary of its kind that I have encountered. Just reading the dictionary constitutes a course in Spanish. You can be assured that I will recommend it to students as well as to colleagues."--Melba Buxbaum, Chair, Modern Language Department, Blackburn College

"I am delighted by the currency and range of this dictionary, which appears to be up to date in everything from vulgarisms to technology. The sentences illustrating the use of each word constitute in themselves almost a course in each of the languages. From now on I will always have it within arm's reach in my study."--Roberto Gonzlez Echevarria, Bass Professor of Hispanic and Comparative Literatures, Yale University

"Deftly designed, this dictionary, no doubt the very best of its kind, is a splendid lesson in bilingualism, a bridge between disparate civilizations and tongues, a place of arrival and departure. Prophetically, every single word uttered in Spanish and English right now, every novel and poem written, can already be found in its inexhaustible, magical pages. I am condemned to return to it time and again, always in search for clues to the puzzles of language and the universe."--Ilan Stavans, author of The Hispanic Condition

"What an incredible dictionary this is! I've been putting it to the test, looking up bizarre, weird Spanish American words (like "macanudo," an Argentineism or "guaracha," a term not in a lot of more traditional dictionaries, from the Caribbean), and I am really impressed.....Coverage of Spanish American (and even Hispanic U.S.) Spanish is outstanding, as near as I can tell. As such, I would say that you have produced a dictionary that is very much of its time and place, which, for my dinero, is what a really first-rate dictionary needs to do....At $35.00, this is an unbelievable bargain."--Earl Fitz, The Pennsylvania State University the job in terms of New World usage (i.E. The Spanish of the Americas)

"The Oxford Spanish Dictionary gives users all the necessary and expected helps for pronunciation, regional labels, subject labels, collocations, colloquial usage, style levels, and the more popular technical and scientific terms....For Spanish translators into and from English, the Oxford Spanish Dictionary should hold them through the nineties. It carries a reasonable price, is based on a corpus of contemporary material, and is recommended for its helpfulness in choosing which word of many offered is le mot juste."--ATA Chronicle

"I am so happy with the quality and richness of your dictionary that I am adopting it as the required bilingual dictionary."--Maria Gagliardo, Professor of Language and Culture, SUNY Purchase

"I will not comment on the price which is simply unbelievably low. But the high quality of the linguistic work deserves some attention: this is one of the most realistic dictionaries I have ever seen. Everything from daily political jargon to vulgarisms seems to have a place in this masterpiece. Last but not least, it is relevant to notice that this democratic and updated dictionary does not consider any particular region as being the most "correct" in its uses of either Spanish or English: languages have no center--and the editors knew it..." --Miguel Gomes, University of Connecticut, Assistant Professor of Modern & Classical Languages

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Spanish-English English Spanish dictionary!, May 24, 2000
By A Customer
After reviewing a lot of dictionaries, each one claiming to be the best and most authoritative in its kind, my choice was the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. It has entries for the uses of Spanish from different countries, including Latin America, Spain and also, "old/archaic" entries, and idioms. Plus, it shows you how to apply a particular word or phrase, which could be the same for everybody, but could have all sorts of different connotations depending on the context or the country where you are. It is absolutely great and I had recommended it to anyone that has asked me for a good Spanish-English dictionary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!!, September 7, 2000

Víctor Hugo Rangel (Berkeley, California, USA) - See all my reviews
I have several other Spanish dictionaires, but not one of them can compare to the 'El Diccionario Oxford'. Coming from a person who utilizes Spanish for a living, I don't know where I would be without it.

I purchased the 1st edition impulsively about six years ago, the year it came out. I had never heard of it, but there was only one on the shelf right next to about a dozen LaRousse's. I scanned through the pages of the Oxford one, comparing it to the ever-popular LaRousse. My immediate instict after examing them was to go with Oxford. To be sure, for the last six years of intense college essays and other reports, it provided accurate translations, useful colloquial phrases and phrases I didn't know a dictionary contained!!! Oxford has been at my side ever since, proudly outranking LaRousse. Now that was the 1st edition, I can only imagine the 2nd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interacting Overseas, July 5, 2000
By
Before undertaking a study abroad program in Bogotá, Colombia (5 years ago), I spoke almost no Spanish. I took an older edition by this author with me at the time. Several other authors claimed to have the best resource, but this author proved to be well above the best. Within 3-4 months time, I was speaking fluent Spanish while taking college level courses. A great deal of vocabulary could be learned by asking questions in everyday society, yet a good portion needed to referenced the old-fashioned way. I was able to succeed in my courses because of the vastness, depth and broad range of terms and phrases in this resource. Not only did this resource help me to excel in college, but in everyday life as well. It exemplifies all words and phrases in a multitude of contexts virtually exhausting all possible utilizations. In addition, it recognizes region-specific terms and phrases when necessary. Unlike any other publication, this dictionary references vulgar terms, which I found to be a priceless tool. These are parts of everyday living, and should be able to be referenced like any other part of spoken language. I have shown this publication to a plethora of individuals from all walks of Hispanic culture, and all have been equally impressed. This, of course, including individuals ranging from ages 16-65, from lawyers and optomologists to bakers and cab drivers. I still have my 1994 edition and it hasn't outdated one bit. This edition only capitalizes on the previous edition. I can't recommend this publication enough. It is very well though-out, written and organized, yet it doesn't take a biochemical engineer to decipher its contents. If you don't shell out the measly 30-some odd dollars for this one, then you really aren't that eager to learn another language.
