Color Name:Merlot
This is an excellent desk at an excellent price. If you are shopping for a good, sturdy wood desk, very easy to assemble, with looks far outpassing its price, then this is the desk for you. The color IS merlot, a reddish tinged brown leaning towards wine color, but it looks fine near dark brown wood furniture. The construction is excellent, much nicer than many of the other "kit furniture" desks you see as it is sturdier (we have both in our home). The drawers are amply sized for writing implements and similar.
If you are looking for a smaller sized desk (newer desks are usually 60"+ wide) with a nice finish and even a sturdy storage shelf underneath (ours is holding several textbooks with no problem or bending), get this desk. I would suggest that if it is going to see heavy use, you get a glass top or similar to protect the finish on the top, this desk is a keeper.

Color Name:Merlot
My desk arrived quickly and undamaged about two weeks ago now, and was very easy to set up. As a previous review stated, the merlot-colored desk is definitely more red in actuality than is pictured in amazon's picture (and the Home Decorator's catalog). But so far, I still find the actual color pretty, if a little surprising. And the quality of the desk itself, I think, is much better than what I was seeing at Office Depot and the like. Keep in mind the depth of the lower shelf is not enough to put a photo box on as pictured in one of the other colors, without its sticking over the edge a couple inches. Also, this desk is the standard height of about 30", and I'm still trying to decide if that is too high for me to be comfortable typing on a laptop. I might have to spring for a plug-in keyboard - but that is not the desk's fault.
Also, it took an extra day for my order confirmation to show up on Home Decorator's website after I got the e-mail saying it
was there. So don't be concerned if this happens.

Amazon Verified Purchase
I realize my review will be in direct contrast to the other reviews, but want to warn potential buyers that their desk may be shipped broken. I was excited to be getting this desk today. UPS delivered it in two boxes. The boxes were in perfect shape; however, upon opening the main box I noticed staples sticking out, drawer glides broken off, cracks in the side of the desk and then pulled it up to look at the top and it was cracked. There is no way this could have happened after shipping. I believe some packers knowingly shipped a defective product. I'm allegedly receiving UPS labels to return the desk and then get a refund - I'll let you know how that goes. I will not buy from this company again.
