I just couldn't stand it any longer. As Latino culture melds into the American mainstream, I felt that part of the American experience was passing me by. OK, once you have made the decision to learn Spanish, where do you begin? I didn't have time for evenings at a Community College. Rosa Martin's book was recommended to me. The lessons quickly focus on the practical (asking directions, going to stores, etc.). Confidence comes quickly with Martin's method. The dialogues are readily applicable to daily life. Importantly, this inspires the student to stay with the program, even when working alone. It's fun. There are no odd Castilian pronunciations or tedious verb-tense arcanery. It is just plain speech for the average Joe (Jose') and quickly assimilated. It reminds me of corporate or armed forces language schools. Martin's book is the best of it's type.

When Amazon gave me the opportunity to try a few things out and give my opinion, I immediatly jumped on this option. I had purchased two other language learning courses in the past year, and due to other obligations, I left off for a while. I thought this course would get me back "into the mood." Wrong! Now I appreciate Mark Frobose and Michel Thomas even more than ever.
Michel Thomas: Michel Thomas Method Spanish For Beginners, 10-CD Program (Michel Thomas Series)
Michel Thomas begins by stating that most users of a language only use a core group of words, phrases etc. Why study a whole lexicon when even native users of a language know and use most often this linguistic core? He then goes to educate the listener to this core by using in house students as demonstrations; the listener becomes the "other" student.
Mark Frobose:Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour
Mark Frobose teaches spanish as a baby learns its first language: repetition and short contexts of usages growing to ever larger strings of words and finally complete compound/complex sentences. He pounds home the basics and slowly spirals to new pertinant words and usages.
Both are hard work, but both are fun, and I feel like I am getting to "know" the language and am not just repeating idioms.
That is exactly what this Oxford spanish course does though. There is no hierarchy or theoretical foundation. It is a random crapshoot of what the editors feel one may encounter when visiting, say, Mexico.

This is a good course in general, I agree. The story at the end of a chapter makes it more interesting. My students like it. I am a Costarican and teach our language to foreigners for holidays and business. I find that I have to complement this course with quite a lot in the way of local expressions and cultural information applicable to Costa Rica. This course appears to have Mexico in mind mainly, but there are other countries in Central America. They need to be catered for too.

As a teacher, I have learned over the years that in order to cover a subject to reach the most people, you have to present the topic in various learning styles. Having a topic covered only in book or only orally when it comes to language is not going to reach all different types of learning styles.

LATIN AMERICAN SPANISH in the OXFORD TAKE OFF IN series is an excellent program. There is a very well laid out presentation of the subject matter and many different learning styles can be reached with this series, although the visual is limited to words in the books only and not visuals as in DVDs.

WHAT COMES IN THIS SET?

This set comes with 4 lesson CDs which contain many lessons as well as review sessions. There is also a practice CD (total of 5 in the kit).

There is a lesson book, and a travel dictionary and travel book.

CD LESSONS

The CD lessons are very well laid out. First the listener is taken through a narrative introduction of various terms and pronunciations of words and phrases featured in the chapter.

Once the lesson is listened to several times, then the student progresses to written lessons which are in the lesson book.

These lessons are broken into several sections.

There are several activities which could be matching exercise using conversation featured in the chapter.

There are vocabulary lists to go over written with the Spanish first and then the English translation.

There are language building activities which feature special instructions for some things that are in the Spanish language which the student might not be aware of. Usually there are several language facts presented in each Lesson.

My friends will tell you that I have a difficulty speaking English, let alone a foreign language, so when I started down the road of learning some Spanish I was met with heckling. That was several weeks ago. While I'm still met with the same amount of heckling, I do know more Spanish.

The materials (CDs and a phrasebook) cover everyday Spanish with a cursory overview of grammar. I figure, if I get to the point where I feel comfortable with this, I can move on to more advanced materials. That's where the strength of Oxford's package lies: give me enough to handle the fundamentals with a decent introductions to more advanced concepts. I feel pretty comfortable knowing the basic "rules" of Spanish after two weeks of limited study.

I'd recommend this to anyone who is wanting to travel to a Latin American country and don't want to feel like a typical gringo by not knowing a bit of Spanish. Give this a good month's worth of study, and you'll feel like this got you your money's worth. Not a bad introduction at all.
