This is my second language learning book from OXFORD, I learned Italian and here I'm learning German, a very well organized well structure course material. There is only a small glitch at the audio, sometimes it refers to the old Deutsch Mark rather than the Euro according to the book. But above it's a very good beginner/ intermediate level course, I wish if OXFORD can come with an advanced level courses.

Checked this out of our local public library and was so impressed that I bought it. There are several languages available in the "Take Off" series, all I would guess live up to Oxford's high standards.

I took two years of college German about 25 years ago. We went to Austria this summer on a trip and I bought this to help me refresh my German. It was very well presented and worked quite effectively.

It walks you through some common social and business situations. It didn't overwhelm you with a ton of vocabulary and stayed pretty focused on the lessons. I was able to mimic the accents pretty well. I actually got some compliments, so I'm guessing the speakers on the CDs must be southern German or Austrian. But we were able to get around quite well with what the course presented.

It is VERY true that folks appreciate the attempt to speak and communicate in their language, even if you don't get your male/female/neuter, nominative/accusative/dative/genitive quite right. They're able to figure it out. Most Germans and Austrians know and speak English pretty well, but that piece of advice they give in the book NOT to let hang-ups in grammar stop you from speaking is the best piece of advice ever. It makes you want to stay longer so you can work out the kinks. I was very pleased with this product.

The concept is good but the speakers (one instrucor & two students) can sometimes be a distraction especilly since you hve to listen very cafefullt to the dialog and through the accent of the instructor. To be fair I have gotten through tape 2 of ten but I would really prefer a transcript to follow along with. Also there does not really seem to be an effective progressive learning method. That is the conversation does not follow a true format.
