Book Description

0195374215 978-0195374216 November 20, 2008 2
While most abnormal psychology texts seem to aim solely for breadth, the acclaimed Oxford Textbook of Psychopathology aims for depth, with a focus on adult disorders and special attention given to the personality disorders. Almost a decade has passed since the first edition was published, establishing itself as an unparalleled guide for professionals and graduate students alike, and in this second edition, esteemed editors Paul H. Blaney and Theodore Millon have once again selected the most eminent researchers in abnormal psychology to cover all the major mental disorders, allowing them to discuss notable issues in the various pathologies which are their expertise. This collection exposes readers to exceptional scholarship, a history of psychopathology, the logic of the best approaches to current disorders, and an expert outlook on what future researchers and mental health professionals will be facing in the years to come.

With extensive coverage of personality disorders and issues related to classification and differential diagnosis, this volume will be exceptionally useful for all mental health workers, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, and as a textbook focused on understanding psychopathology in depth, as well as a valuable guide for graduate psychology students and psychiatric residents.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Since the adoption of the DSM-IV, there has been a void in graduate-level textbooks on psychopathology, that is, until now. This text lives up to its responsibility to provide students with updated and in-depth information that takes them well beyond every undergraduate psychopathology text. It is balanced in every dimension that I had hoped, truly a scholarly achievement."--Dwain Pellebon, University of Oklahoma

"This is a textbook about the psychopathology of major mental health disorders, including Axis 1 and personality disorders. This book will enhance understanding of theory and research of the psychopathology behind major mental health disorders and their treatment options. It is intended for mainly mental health workers including psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, clinical psychologists, social workers, and psychiatry nurses. The focus is on the psychopathology of various diseases. More than 10 different Axis I disorders are covered in a detailed manner. What sets this book apart from others is the extensive coverage of personality disorders, and discussion of their psychopathology and treatment options. The editors are experts in their areas. Tables and illustrations enhance understanding of the material. Approaching each diagnosis from various perspectives without taking sides, the editors broaden the view of the audience." - Ozlem Uyar, Doody's Electronic Journal --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard, July 15, 2000

It's a shame this book is a special order. Everyone I have shown the book to, has gone gah-gah (this is a word?) The scholastic and academic quality are consistent with the best of the Oxford Press. The clarity and parsimony of the explication is beautiful. The data are current and insightful. Anyone in clinical practice would benefit from this book. The diagnoses used are those from DSM-IV, but the insight into patient behavior may be timeless. Although as an edited book it is subject to inter-author variability, I found none; rather a consistent voice of compassion for patients, tempered by a scientific mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like the book, July 6, 2010

This review is from: Oxford Textbook of Psychopathology (Oxford Series in Clinical Psychology) (Hardcover)
The book starts off dry and dense but very helpful over all in my class. It damages very easy with the slighest little drop but the book contains lots of information that you would have to search multiple sources to find. It is also organized very well and after the first few chapters reading it is a breeze. Pricy but required wrth the investment
