5.0 out of 5 stars Works, within reason., July 19, 2000
This review is from: Oxycise! (Paperback)
I did this program for about five months and was pleased to find that it actually did work, and it does feel good. You can lose weight on it (I lost about 10 pounds in 3-4 months) and it does develop you aerobically. (I found myself less out-of-breath when I exerted myself in whatever task I had on hand.) You can do as much as you like and as little as about 15 minutes a day, and this is a =real= 15 minutes, not an =exercise= 15 minutes, which normally doesn't include warming up, cooling down, showering, changing clothes, et cetera.

Since the complete thing takes 15 minutes, doesn't require a warm-up or a cool-down, isn't likely to make you sweat, or even require work-out clothes, it's a good way to get some activity into your life. It's easy to do when injured, and probably even a good idea when sick in many cases, unlike most workouts. You can even do it in the car.

Are there problems with it? Well, yes, you might find it very unpleasant to actually =do=. Intense breathing is not for everyone. (Some people compare it to yoga, but it's not at all meditative.) You're also not going to get the kind of muscles you'll get from the Body-for-LIFE program (for example) or the sort of weight-loss you might get from the Atkins diet.

But ultimately, I'm glad to have this program in my exercise arsenal. It can give you an energy boost when you're stuck in traffic, give you a way to keep your aerobic level up after a long period of not exercising, and is definitely a worthwhile effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars So glad I purchased it!, March 14, 2000
This review is from: Oxycise! (Paperback)
I just want to say that I really enjoy this book. It does make sense: Oxygene burns fat and it's so simple to do! I've tried a similar method wich is good, but Oxycise is even better and more convenient. The book is simple, clear, you have picture of Jill (the author) doing the positions. And it works! I did it for 3 days and I already feel the difference, I feel lighter, I have more energy. I can't wait to mesure again! If I give 4 stars and not 5 stars to the book is that it's always better to call or e-mail an Oxycise instructor to make sure you get the technique. The book itself is excellent. But to get your support on the [website] is a must. If you do both, you'll be delighted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adaptable exercise for the differently abled., May 21, 2003
By
This review is from: Oxycise! (Paperback)
A friend of mine who weighed over 400 pounds first introduced me to Oxycise because it was the only exercise he could do, and the system, combined with a lowish-carbohydrate regimen did help him to normalize his weight for the first time in his adult life. I also have another friend who navigates life most often from a wheelchair, and she uses Oxycise, adapting the routines to her needs.

However, after my friends introduced me to Oxycise, I laid the tapes aside, preferring more rigorous activities such as Boxercise, swimming, and la danse Orientale. Last month, I was waylaid by an inner ear infection that significantly limited my activity. With my physician's permission--which one should have before adding any new exercise--I began Oxycise and was able to retain much of my muscle tone and general fitness through my illness. I plan to keep Oxycise as part of my overall fitness activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathe deeply and burn away your fat, January 12, 2008
By
This review is from: Oxycise! (Paperback)
OXYCISE! is an important tile in the breathing-based fitness mosaic. Jill Johnson, via her three-part packet of book, dvd and audio tape, describes, illustrates and praises a vigorous 15 minutes per day breathing workout.

Breathe in deeply and quickly from your diaphragm, inhale three last times, then exhale fast with three final puffs. Repeat four more times. That is the basic exercise. Do it in a total of five different postures and you are done for the day: 15 minutes. Ms Johnson gives many additional postures and stretches, so you will not be bored. At first my wife got dizzy trying this fast, constricted breathing and I myself had a nose bleed.

But it doesn't take long, and you soon have a simple routine that you can vary by sitting, standing or lying down. And for the rest of the day, when you think about your breathing during a boring staff meeting or Red Hats Ladies meeting, just do a slow, steady version of the above (without the final puffs or sucks) and expand your lung capacity beyond the pitiful 20% that most of us upper chest breathers have come to think of as normal.

And when you are routinely breathing at an enhanced 60% or 80% lung capacity, what are some good by-products?

First, you will be better at any sport that responds to deep breathing, e.g. treadmilling or even marathoning.

Second, you will add an extra dimension to your yoga, tai chi or other exercises.

And, thirdly, with the Hindus and Buddhists you can study whole sciences of breathing and meditation.

Fourthly, like her predecessor Pam Grout (JUMPSTART YOUR METABOLISM), Jill R. Johnson also claims that deep breathing on a regular basis will make you lose weight.

Why would that work? Because, both women argue, oxygen burns (oxygenates) fat stored in our bodies. The more oxygen we breathe in, therefore, the more and faster we remove fat from our cells. And exhaling sucks fats and other wastes out of our body. Johnson cites many satisfied customers: deep breathing -- fast or slow -- causes weight loss.

What's more: deep, systematic, diaphragmatic breathing costs nothing. Save the cost of running shoes, gym dues and heavy exercise equipment.

Hurrah! -OOO-

5.0 out of 5 stars Oxycise! ; a new lifestyle, February 2, 2009
This review is from: Oxycise! (Paperback)
Since menopause, I have many more problems that my regular Callanetics programm could handle. In 1986, i began to practice Callanetics that erased my saddle bags and did great but then, i was menopaused and Callanetics revealed its shortcomings. What to do against this sagging skin, this cellulite all over my body, especially around my arms? my researches made me think that breathing exercises are the answer to all that and more. I tried many breathing execise programs, they are boring, time consuming and for some of the, dangerous. Oxycise is adapted to glaucoma condition like mine, it take no time at all to practice every day, it is a tremendous breathing program coupled, at the same time, to a workout programm that curve and sculpt my figure better that other programs. So, clearly said, you do not have to do a breathing workout every day, and a physical workout every day. Just oxycise, only 15 minutes! In 2006, the new Callanetics programm, "Callanetics evolution" was launched. It is a nice programm but like all other workouts, even TTapp, Bikram Yoga, it cause fatigue, is time consuming, incomplete, and it does not adress all your issues. I honestly gave a try to all kind of sophisticated workouts. Until recently, i thought that Callanetics evolution was the new answer for me, then, TTapp but since a few month of dedication to Oxycise, the results are there and they speak for themselves! To summ up, Oxycise does everything and more in a very short period of time every day, just 15 minutes that you can adapt; 5 minutes here, 5 other theres. My life have changed completely, that is why i call Oxycise, not only of simply a workout programm but a new way of life. Just a small exemple; since oxycise, i do not catch cold anymore! Bravo, Mrs Johnson and her marvelous team!

I used Oxycise this past May to help me recover from pneumonia. It was the best thing that I could have done! I regained my strength and oxygen levels quickly and my pneumonia was gone in a few days. I highly recommend Oxycise. It's the best kept secret that won't be too much longer. I Oxycise 6-7 days a week just to get healthy oxygen into my lungs! Only 15 mins a day..and you can even do it while driving!

I'm an ex smoker..I quit over 20 years ago but I owe my lungs my gratitude and by Oxycise, I can say "thank you" for healing and taking good care of me! Any weight loss that comes is icing on the cake. People are asking me if I'm losing weight! My body is toning up and I'm only on Level 1. There are 3 more advanced levels..!
You will notice, more energy, more focus and a happier attitude. I think Oxycise is better for depression than any pills.
