Ambient and electronic pioneer Jean Michel Jarre, the son of film score writer Maurice Jarre was born in France in 1948. He became world famous for Oxygene and its follow up Equinoxe.

Editorial Reviews

2007 digitally remastered 30th Anniversary edition of this influential Electronic album. Famed for it's melodic lushed spaced-out Electronica, this is the album that captured keyboard maestro Jarre at his zenith. The lead single 'Oxygene IV' is one the most recognizable Electronic pieces in recent history. The son of famed French film composer Maurice Jarre, Jean-Michel Jarre is a synthesizer wizard, who had a number of instrumental hits, beginning in 1977 with "Oxygene", the success of which propelled him to pop-star status. In the ensuing decades, he has continued releasing albums and mounting enormous stage spectacles around the globe. EMI. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent in 1976, and is still top of its class, September 21, 2002

This CD made quite an impression on me as a kid in 1976, and I understand that it impressed the entire planet too. No one has changed the scene of electronic music like Jean-Michel Jarre, and no one can challence him and win. Unfortunately his last CD's have been disappointing, but fortunately for him his older works still makes him the king of electronic music. I own a giant collection of electronic music but it does just not compare to his early works. This records is composed much like classical music by famous composers like Mozart, Bach etc. etc. but of course just not the same kind of music. But he pays just as much attention to every details as the them. A genious!

Not a single track here is a throwaway. His compositions are unique and was able to create a trademark sound that only him can create. He may have been influenced by the German school of electronic music but his style is totally independent and distinct. This is the school of electronic music the French or Jarre way and far more superior that any of his releases. This album is a full menu from ambient, new age, instrumental rock, dark, prog and ofcourse electronic or synthesizer music that is raving in that era. Jarre got them all in this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching, January 25, 2003
This review is from: Oxygene (Audio CD)
I have problems deciding whether this is my favourite album or Equinoxe (also by Jarre) is. This without doubt has the most 'sad' (depressing) songs on any of his CDs. BUT, they are done so well that you ignore this factor, and instead concentrate on just how good they are. In my opinion, the 'sad' songs are JM Jarre's biggest talent.
