5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Excellent February 25, 2014
Format:Audio CD
After listening to "Setbacks" and "Habits & Contradictions" I had concerningly high expectations for Schoolboy Q's major label debut. I wanted him to follow up to those two great albums (especially the latter) with the original material and electrifying content I had learned to expect from him.

Fortunately, he delivered. Not only did this album meet my rather abnormally high expectations, it exceeded them. It's more of the talented, troubled, and twisted artist that Schoolboy Q's core audience has come to appreciate, but all the tracks manage to be original enough to reward both his sincerest fans and entertaining enough to lure in newcomers and grip them feverishly.

The album starts off with Q's young daughter introducing herself to the listeners, whereupon she reflects her father's coarse manner of speaking and forcefully asserts that her father is a "Gangsta" and the album begins.

The strongest aspect of this album is its ability to breach a wide variety of topics and contain a diverse group of songs. Not a single track sounds similar to any others. The beats are impeccable and the lyrics, breadth, range and topics he breaches are truly astounding. He shatters all of the preconceived notions that may exist on the album and offers all of his fans something to enjoy. There are tracks that reveal the menacing gangster within him, and there are tracks that reveal the doting father. Others reveal the drugged mess of a man he became ("Prescription/Oxymoron" was somber but laced with emotions) while still others reflect the braggadocios, hilarious and groovy man that has managed to captivate audiences with his visceral voice as well as his uncanny ability to speak his mind, regardless of the harrowing repercussions that such an activity may introduce into his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ronald Reagan Era February 26, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Being a child of the '70's, I've been around long enough to witness the Reagan era's so called war on drugs and the effect that it's empty rhetoric and sinister justification on the black community has had on the youth; "flood the streets with cheap easy accessible rock cocaine (crack), lock all of the males up on drug charges, turn the mothers into dope fiends and let the streets raise the young males." This is LA reality in the late 70's & early '80's. Survival of the fittest at all costs.
This is what Q lived through and witnessed first hand as a youth on 51st and Fig so what you are witnessing and hearing is a manifestation of his trials and tribulations. Don't hate or criticize if you've never had to live through it. This album isn't for you and I certainly am not making any apologies for that. This is classic LEFTCOAST "REAL" STREET MUSIC...that NWA Straight outta Compton, that Ice Cube Death Certificate, that Spice-1, RBL Posse type s***!! I salute you Q and everybody else on the left keepin' it 100 from the Fig to the 4-Line, from the 60's to the Grapes, from the Hunters to Lincoln Park down in SD.....Red n Blue make green but unity is GOLDEN!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album from a great artist April 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a great, solid album from Schoolboy Q. It has good production, lyrics, and some pretty amazing beats as well. If you're a fan of any of his previous work, or if you're a fan of rap/hip-hop, or any other Top Dawg Entertainment artist I would definitely pick this up. Even if you aren't a fan, I would still recommend giving this album a try because you won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations April 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD
When I got this album I got it on a whim. I hadn't really dedicated a lot of time listening to Q but the tracks are all above the expectation I had for the album, and I thoroughly enjoy listening to it as a whole.

3.0 out of 5 stars Downgrade from last album, but still solid. April 5, 2014
By Free
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This is Schoolboy Q's follow to his highly received debut album Habits & Contradictions. This album includes 15 tracks with features from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, Tyler the Creator, Raekwon, and others.

This album definitely has it's highs and lows. Personally, I feel the production on this project simply wasn't as hard hitting and live as listeners have come to love about him.

His content and personality is still present on the tracks but unfortunately the sound and mood you feel when listening isn't.

However, if you love Schoolboy Q I still think this album is worth purchasing and keeping in your collection. There are some real good gems on this album such as the obvious Man of the Year track.

Go support him at his shows, he's awesome live.

5.0 out of 5 stars West Coast Forever! April 2, 2014
By SFNico
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
another killler album from california right here, folks………….
something is up in the sunshine state at the moment.

Oxymoron covers so much.
and sounds so fresh,so good to my tired ears…..

he also raps about prescription drugs like oxycontin
and i think that will reach a lot of younger people in trouble with those things.

this new wave is amazing.
follow this thing closely from now…………...
