Editorial Reviews

Sandra St. Victor is a powerful R&B/Soul/Rock singer and songwriter who has sung and toured with Chaka Khan, Roy Ayers, Freddie Jackson and others. As lead vocalist of critically acclaimed Funk/Soul/Rock band The Family Stand, which scored a #3 R&B hit with "Ghetto Heaven," Sandra won a fervent fan base. Her songs have been recorded by Prince, Chaka Khan and Tina Turner. Oya's Daughter is a tour de force produced by cult favorite DJ/re mixer/producer Mark de Clive Lowe, who has done work for Lauryn Hill, Jody Watley, Omar and many others. The project ranges from the Electro grooves of "I Prefer" to the straight up R&B balladry of "Coming Around;" another highlight is "Sugarfoot Is Dead," Sandra's tribute to the iconic vocalist/guitarist of The Ohio Players, who passed away earlier this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT'S WRONG WITH BLACK RADIO? THIS IS REAL GENIUS! September 24, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
So, Black radio supports commercialized, trivialized, homogenized, sanitized, sexist, misogynistic, caustic, hopelss, and down right dopey, dreary and daft bubble gum pop and R&B, but they won't play one of the true geniuses of our age? Do not wait until years down the line when you finally get this recording and say, "Damn, she was bad." you can do it right now. Bravo my sista. The world needs you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mack Diva Returns With Funk, Soul And Spiritual Vibe October 11, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Sandra St. Victor is one of those amazing underground artists that everyone who hears her music wants to know "how come more people don't know about her?" But it is certainly true that those who know her love her. "Oya's Daughter" is I think only her third released solo album after her work with ground-breaking funk/soul/rock band The Family Stand...I think it is her best. First of all, produced by Mark de Clive, it is a true album...made to be heard from start to finish, takes you on a musical/spiritual journey. Along the way she delivers funk, soul, jazzy vibes and an African tinge...her lyrics are thought-provoking and you may not comprehend all of them on first about that, lyrics worth thinking about! And the music isn't always straightforward either, sometimes subtle, sometimes funky in your face, there's a lot going on...all of that means that this album reward repeated plays as you hear/discover more with each play. And Sandra's voice is a treasure....big range, powerful when she wants to be, intimate when she needs to be....if you're looking for music with a high nutrient value, if you're tired of simple-minded superfical sounds, if you like funk/soul, you'll enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding original songstress October 7, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sandra takes you on a journey with her voice, music, and lyrics. Love this cd from beginning to end, oh but there is no end , only to be continued. Don't compare it to MacDiva,or any of her other solo projects, cause it's another experience of Mrs. Victor in itself. Still has that raw soulfulnes, spirituallity, and jazzyness only she can Stand and Deliver. There is so much to this artist, if you haven't, get into Sandra St. Victor. You want be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soul Like They Almost Don't Make Anymore! December 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I get a new album I like to listen to it the first time all the way through with minimal
distractions. This cd reminded me of the first time I heard Little Lost Girls Blues and Star Kitty's Revenge - I knew I was
listening to the descendants of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday and Betty Davis and Joyce Kennedy. And I didn't
purchase it because of radio singles and major label push like Baduizm or Macy Gray, this music found it's way into my hands
and ears BECAUSE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO! I only knew SSV before for "Rise", I am glad to have become better acquainted with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album November 18, 2013
By Del
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD is in my top 2 or 3 CDs of 2013, and I've bought about 40 plus CD this year. I have always been into SSV as a vocalist. That's what naturally drives me to her music. Her melodies and her amazing tone and musicality. But this album, for me, is her best poetry for sure. She never disappoints with her lyrics, but this time, she hit a home run. Her spirit, or should I say, Oya's spirit talk through SSV in this album. She shows not only her observation of the world we live in, but also her care and concern for its improvement. That's a true artist. My favorite cuts are "Coming Around", which to me, is a no. 1, extremely radio-friendly smash waiting to be tapped, "Grateful" and "Precense" I agree with others, don't wait until 5 years from now to go back and realize this album was the bomb. Live in the now with this album! Lyrical content 10/10; her voice 10/10, melodic content 10/10. What else can I say?
