I'LL DATE ANYONE WITH A BUTTERFLY BIRTHMARK, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Oyayubihime Infinity: VOL 01 (Paperback)
Kanoko Himemiya is a high schooler that just likes to blend into the background, spending most of her time text messaging her sister, Mayu. Kanoko lives an alternate life through her beautiful and talented sister. The two girls concocted a pop idol image for Mayu, changing her name to "Maya Yuuki" and were surprised to see her career take off, even though Mayu's real personality is the exact opposite of "Maya". Things were going pretty good until Tsubame Yoshizawa, the most popular boy in school, touches the butterfly shaped birthmark on Kanoko's thumb with his own identical one. In fact, Maya has the same mark too! When Kanoko and Tsubame touch, a flood of strange images floods through her mind, images that Tsubame says come from a past life, a life in which they were lovers! Tsubame is searching the country for the person with butterfly birthmarks because one of them is the person he loved long ago.
The biggest problem I had with this manga was the character of Tsubame. I mean this "guy" makes Liberace look like a randy ladies man! Picture this, Tsubame gets off on painting girl's fingernails, and he even likes to paint his own. Granted he's doing that so he can check their thumbs for the butterfly birthmark, but he also use to date his roommate, Mike, because he too had the mark! So yeah, it's kinda hard to identify with a bisexual girly man who has no evidence that his theory of what the butterfly represents is right at all. Based on his actions, I would be scared to see how he would react if he found the mark on an animal, such as a small dog. He also seems to be attracting a small stable of potential lovers with no regard to any of their feelings. Yes, Tsubame is the world's most feminine gigolo. There's just no interest here for me. Infinity is a girl's romance with the trapping of supernatural themes and yaoi under and overtones but I don't think it will satisfy fans of any of these genres. The story is just boring and reminds me of another CMX title, Tower of the Future, with wimpy boys and angsty girls that goes nowhere. But at least that book's first volume was interesting. I don't give very many one star reviews, but Oyayubihime Infinity earned it with flying colors.
