Countless thousands of non-English speakers cram stadiums and theaters all over the world, so why (oh why) does it seem so difficult for U.S. audiences to embrace widely a band as clearly worthy of attention as Aterciopelados? Andrea Echeverri sings in Spanish, sure, but the band revels in melding the instrumental palettes of South America with a sharply smart rock--just spin the trumpets and accordions in "Don Dinero"--so that their tunes are eminently physical. They keep their ears on the dances that popular musics have triggered in their native Colombia (and across South America), and then Aterciopelados delves deeply into straight-up rock & roll, hard-hit drums, and loud guitars. The band has changed shapes over the years, going from a punk-rock scuttle to an electronics-tinged brand pop--with Echeverri's declarative mid-range delivery always in top form. Aterciopelados is the best and after many years, they do not disappoint. Upbeat, melodic, meaningful- this music sill have you thumping your feet and feeling the positive vibrations. This music has many influences and from flutes to surf guitar, you will be excited by the global harmony. Forget Shakira- this is the best sound direct from Colombia, oh the refusal to sell out and stay true to ones art shines brillantly- OYE!!!! Whether you speak spanish or not, you can enjoy this- however it is worth translating the words because of the depth of the lyrics.

Colombian Latin alternative rockeros return to form with this outstanding album. The music is so good you don't even need to understand Spanish to get it. "Complemento," "Paces" and "Al Parque"are sure to appear in a future greatest hits compilation. These musical witch doctors have been concocting just the right amount of rock, Colombian folkloric music, Andean spiritual rhythms and Afro-South American beats for the perfect potion and they've never shared it with anyone (nor has any group been able to reverse engineer it). On "Oye" it's evident they still have the recipe carefully tucked away and the potion still has magical healing powers.

Though their creative trajectory has transformed them from punks to popstars to trip-hopsters (as captured on their appropriately titled and excellent greatest hits CD, "Evolucion/Evolution"), it's the first time they appear to be basking in nostalgia and taking a step back, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're the Aterciopelados. And it's especially not a bad thing when the album is reminiscent of their amazing 1997 release, "Pipa de la Paz." Though on this album, you won't catch former uber feminist and vocalist Andrea Echeverri who recently became a mom singing lyrics like: "I won't ruin my silhouette with a baby" as she did on "La Culpable" off the "Pipa" album.

The Latin alternative world can also exhale. Despite the lanky Echeverri and the mousy Hector Buitrago helping each other out on both of their recent solid solo efforts, the rumors ran rampant about an imminent break-up. Though Echeverri's Latin Grammy-nominated album of her same name had a commercial edge over Buitrago's "Connector," Buitrago demonstrated that he can take some calculated artistic risks and still pull off a successful avant-garde album.

To enjoy this album you don't need Spanish. You don't even need an open mind. All you need is good taste. Enjoy! --Mario I. Oña

Yes, Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago made mellow (but highly enjoyable) solo albums in the past year. Yes, it's been 5 years since the last Aterciopelados studio album....but wow, what a return to form!

The new album "Oye" will definitely appeal to fans who enjoyed the more rock-ish elements of albums like 'Pipa de la Paz.' I'm infatuated with the first single "Complemento", as well as the infectious song "Al Parque".

If you are a fan of Latin rock or world music, this is the "MUST-HAVE" Latin Alternative album of 2006! Forget Juanes or Shakira, this is real Colombian music.
