Editorial Reviews

Review

I'm crazy about Denise Duhamel's and Maureen Seaton's collaborations...The two poets are having so much fun with the language it rubs off on the reader. They're funny and they're smart and they're fast...and they're proving how much vitality there is in collaboration as an avant-garde ideal and a New York School tradition. -- David Lehman

5.0 out of 5 stars How the Sky Fell, May 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Oyl (Paperback)
which is the title of another brilliant book of Ms. Duhamel's. There, as here, she skewers our preconceived notions about what is laughably acceptable as well as what we ridiculously reject in our present consumerist culture. We're still puritanical until it sells. Duhamel and Seaton make one hell of a team, once again (see Exquisite Politics). Oyl is a fabulous little book, and I can tell from these muscular poems these girls eat their spinach.

5.0 out of 5 stars TAKE THAT, POPEYE!, April 26, 2000
This review is from: Oyl (Paperback)
Taking up where EXQUISITE POLITICS left off, Duhamel and Seaton have done it again--poetically exploring the concepts of butch and femme! And what better binaries than Popeye and Olive Oyl? Blending Popeye speak (I yam what I yam...), Oulipo techniques, sestinas and pantoums, Duhamel and Seaton have written OYL, a hilarious and touching book. They interview Olive Oyl, then reinvent cartoon plots with postfeminist twists that will keep you guessing. These "girls" know how to have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars If Olive didn't exist she would have to have been invented..., August 19, 2011

...and this dynamic duo do their darndest. In these lovingly crafted pages Ms Oyl gains creative control, 'like humans after God gave them free will'. Since she preceded Popeye in the Thimble Theater comic strip (by a full 10 years) he naturally had to be made from her rib.. Comes complete with Oulipean footnotes! And pics!!
