5.0 out of 5 stars Oyster Farmer
I bought Oyster Farmer because of Alex O'Loughlin, spelled O'Lachlan in the movie from Moonlight on CBS. I Loved, loved, loved this movie and if I were going to buy just one of his, this would be the one. I have seen almost all of his performances , seven total , and this one stands out for no other reason than he Lives and it ends happily. Without going into the plot to...

I have seen almost all of his performances , seven total , and this one stands out for no other reason than he Lives and it ends happily. Without going into the plot to great extent, it does take place in New South Wales and was produced by Showtime Australia. It is gorgeous scenery and the music is pure aboriginal (I hope you know what I mean). You can see the boomerangs flying when you just listen. He made this four years ago(2004) and you can see how far he has come if you are a fan of the CBS show Moonlight. Highly recommend. This was also the selection for the Toronto Film Festival - -probably 2005.

This movie is an absolute GEM! I simply cannot believe that there are no reviews of it. I can't remember where I heard about it, but when I knew that it was available through Amazon, I knew that I wanted to have a personal copy of the DVD. I really don't want to let any viewer know just what the movie
is about (the Amazon synopsis is very accurate), so I won't give
any specifics about the movie. I would prefer that you WATCH THIS MOVIE!! The acting is superb, and the scenery for the
photography is even more amazing. I loaned this movie to another "movie aficianodo" and she was as enthusiastic about its quality as well. It was filmed and released in 2004 in Australia, but very poorly marketed, and it wasn't until just recently that it was released in the US, in 2006. This Australian movie is truly phenomenal.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Film is Truly a Work of Art, April 7, 2009
This review is from: Oyster Farmer (DVD)
I bought Oyster Farmer because I am a fan of Alex O'Loughlin. I have all of his work on DVD now, and the man can do no wrong on film! Oyster Farmer is one of his first movies, and his portrayal of Jack Flange is absolutely delightful. This film is a beautiful story set on the banks of the Hawkesbury River in Australia. By the time the movie was over I wanted to go and live there, right along with the wonderfully quirky characters. David Field, Jim Norton and Jack Thompson are all excellent, as is the entire cast - but Alex O. outshines them all. This film is funny, sexy and at times very touching. It has a bit of something for every movie lover. It is a film to watch and love over and over, and makes a wonderful gift.

Never heard of the movie before until I went on a search for all things O'Loughlin. Its a low budget movie that was filmed on location, literally on the river bank, in Australia. These are real people that are quickly likeable. Jack is a quiet guy who's only family is his older sister who is in a hospital following an accident. He does what he can to provide financially for her and her rehab. Everything in this movie is suble and it grows on you every time you watch it. There are funny scenes and also scenes with Alex that you want to hit your 'back' button again and again. I will never look at a boat dock the same way. Its a charming little story that is worth watching.

I bought this because Alex O'Loughlin is in it and I like him on the CBS show "Moonlight." He's awfully pretty to look at and, apparently, can act. "Oyster Farmer" is also interesting because it's a type of work most Americans (and Europeans) are probably not aware of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pearl In the Oyster, April 3, 2006
This review is from: Oyster Farmer (DVD)
If Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" is about fishing, then "Oyster Farmer" is about oyster farming. The story begins with a young man Jack Flange, who robs a fish market and mails the cash to an isolated village where oyster farming is the key business. When the parcel goes missing, he is forced to join the rest as oyster farmer and finds his suspects.

His evaluation of the villagers and interpretation of happenings in the village is solely about finding the bad guy who steals his money. Unfortunately, all his efforts are in vain. People there just care about how to grow better "oysters"; a father tries to reconcile with his daughter; a divorced husband tries to reconcile with his wife; a divorced woman tries to prove herself as a good oyster farmer. Getting rich is not in their equation of living.

Jack's search for the money and the greedy guy and the villagers' search for love and harmony forms the dialectic theme of the story. The village becomes the lost horizon for the city boy and the oyster becomes his salvation. The black, rough, and dirty shell of the oyster and the white, smooth and juicy oyster meat serves as vital symbol to guide us through the film. The meaning and implication of "Oyster Farmer" are soul reaching and rich. If it is not as great as Hemingway's, it is surely a good dose of chicken soup for the mind of metropolitan. Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know - Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961)

I am a huge Alex O'Loughlin fan and I bought this movie for the sole reason that he was in it. Once I began to watch I was captivated by the warmth that the cast brought to the characters and I liked the way they all became a family in the end.
There was some slow parts but on the whole it keeps you entertained. And the scene with the dog is funny, you just have to laugh. Well worth buying.

I loved this movie. Alex O'Laughlin is simply the sexiest man alive. People magazine got it wrong on that score. I had to get used to his real accent because I was used to his Americanism from Moonlight, but I got a kick out of the story once I got the hang of it. I hope that Alex has plans to do more American TV because the powers that be at CBS were stupid to cancel the show voted the most popular new drama by the People's Choice Awards.
