5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing synthesis of literary and visual art, December 14, 2001
By
This review is from: An Oz Album (Paperback)
Unlike any other book of poetry I've ever seen. The closest comparison would be William Blake's hand-lettered and illustrated works, only here the words are the art. Alba has taken concrete poetry to a new level -- I hate even to use the term "concrete poetry" to describe it because most concrete poetry I've ever seen seems somehow cheesey, and this is anything but.

Alba's experiments with typography and word design are compelling. The book is like an amusement park ride that you want to do over and over. Every page has a new riddle to explore.

"An Oz Album" is as much a work of visual art as it is literary art. It's beautifully crafted, even though it seems mostly done by computer. For example, the cover is wrapped in some sort of semi-transparent paper inscribed with a word puzzle / poem.

OK, I see I've been gushing about it, but I'm really excited by this. It's like I've discovered a new country or something, and I want everyone else to know about it, too.
