Superficial and unhelpful, September 26, 1999

This review is from: Oz Clarke's Wine Companion: Tuscany Guide (Oz Clarke's Wine Companions) (Paperback)
During a recent trip to Tuscany, I found Oz Clarke's Guide to Tuscan wines to be very superficial and not paricularly useful for the wine lover trying to experience the wines of Tuscany. There is no mention of wines from areas other that Chianti, Montalcino and Montopulciano: the wines of Lucca and Scansano are not included. Little attempt is made to discuss individual growers and wineries. The accompanying map is cumbersome and of little or no use to the traveller exploring Tuscany in pursuit its fine wines.

helpful in a pinch, April 26, 2000

I found this book while in tuscany and found it very useful. The map was lame. But the descriptions of the wineries, retaurants and towns actually led us to some real gems. For a quick overview of the primary tuscan wines, this is a helpful guide. If you need lengthy in-depth discussion of every wine and estate in tuscany you may need to look somewhere else. Besides tasting the wine is more fun than reading about it.
