5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, July 10, 2010

This is simply great lump charcoal. it lights easily in a chimney starter and burns hot and long. Steak grilled with this coal is amazing. As good as any I've had in a steakhouse. I often don't burn all of the charcoal and can reuse the leftover for my next grilling. Something i haven't ever been able to so with regular briquettes. And there is far less ash to clean up as compared to briquettes. I won't be going back to briquettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent charcoal, December 1, 2009

This is one the best lump charcoals you can use as far as I am concerned. It burns hot and seems to last quite a while in my big green egg. There is very little dust or small pieces with a good mix of medium and large pieces. I use it for grilling, smoking and indirect cooking. This is a first rate lump charcoal.

Impressed with the high heat and long burning time. Will keep this brand in stock for all grilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very special charcoal, September 11, 2010

Recently I got back into charcoal cooking, and as usual I began to search for the best charcoal, especially after I learned that my usual charcoal has, amazingly, COAL in it. I guess that makes sense, but I thought it was all wood. That particular brand, found by the ton everywhere, not only has coal, but several other odd ingredients I haven't intentionally eaten since age one or so. And whatever's in your charcoal ends up in small amounts in your food, so I'm off that stuff for good.

This hardwood charcoal is the best of the solid hardwood coals I've tried. It has a pleasant, mild smokey scent, and adds a very subtle smoke flavor to food, burns for a very long time, and makes a delightful "tinkling" sound when poured - an odd thing to enjoy, I guess, but I do.

Unfortunately, I had to pay lots and lots for shipping ... I can't find it in local stores, and I'm not sure it's worth that considerable extra price. I've found two other good hardwood charcoals in local stores, and at half the price (no shipping), I'm satisfied with those. I think I'll treat myself with this product now and then, though.

By the way, for lighting charcoal, I discovered a "chimney starter." The fluids I'd been using have to add some cruddy content to the charcoal smoke, and to my delight, a chimney is a clean and quick starter, though it's a really simple way to light a wood deck or dry grass on fire too, if you're sloppy handling it, and then you're right back to undesireable smoke additives, not to mention needing a new house.

MY EDIT AFTER FURTHER CHECKING: I see that the current shipping price ($4.95) is much lower than I paid for my first order, so I'm buying a bag right now!

Easy to light, long burn time, nice light smoke flavor. Really one of the best all purpose charcoals available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Charcoal I've Found, June 28, 2011

I have tried several different kinds of lump charcoals and this one is the best overall. In fact, I've recommended this stuff to about 8 or 9 friends that all keep coming back for more. We buy this stuff by the pallet now (about 65 bags). It lights in less than 15 minutes in a chimney starter, burns very hot, and gives meats and vegetables a great light, smoky oak flavor. Another great thing about this charcoal is that there's no filler at all; it is all chunks of oak. This means there's not much ash or dust when you're done cooking. Also, once you cut off the air to the coals when you're done cooking, you can preserve about 25% of the coals for your next round of cooking.

Ozark was above average. It burned well, had a nice mild smell, and had nice pieces in the bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Charcoal. Kinda Pricey, January 2, 2012

Ozark Oak lump charcoal is better than any other kind I've used. I noticed the difference when I poured it in my Big Green Egg. It tinkles like glass...pure carbon. And the large irregular chunks are loose so air goes thru the fire easily and makes it burn hot. Best of all. When I close up my Egg and the fire goes out the unburned chunks are large and much easier to relight. I have had trouble with other brands forming small chunks that prevent good ventilation.

Some of the cheaper kinds of lump charcoal are obviously made from old lumber, pallets, flooring.... who knows what? I don't want to cook over old paint, glue, and other bad stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new "Go To" Charcoal, November 7, 2011

Great pieces and very good flavor charcoal. I prefer less smoky flavor and this brand was perfectly mild. The pieces were mostly medium to large size and there were very few small pieces in the bag. The bag did tear very easily so I would be more careful handling it next time. I have done ribs, brisket, pork butt and shoulder, steaks, burgers and venison all with great results and feedback from many hungry pit attendees. Will be using this charcoal often in the future.

Really good product. Worth ordering. A little pricey for a 10lb bag, But great quality and performance. I have been experimenting with multiple lump coals and found this one to be really great.
