5.0 out of 5 stars JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER!
This is a musician's recording that can be appreciated and enjoyed by all. Smooth jazz be damned, this is jazz at its raggedy, powerful best. Outstanding covers played with verve and innovation. Kind of hard not to play these grooves without significant volume. An absolute must have for the summer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bass Solos Deluxe
If you are a big fan of bass guitar solos, this is the CD for you. But, I am not a big fan of bass guitar solos, so I do not care for about half the songs. Much of it is bass solos with drums and some intermitent guitar or keyboard sounds. I made a CD from it of the songs that do not have extended bass solos; it is about 45 minutes long. I like funky jazz, but this...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Marcus Miller CD..., September 13, 2005

I have couple of Marcus Miller studio albums and I like them, but I find them a little bit too smooth. I saw him for the first time this summer, and was blown away by the energy and rawer sound which led me to buy this live album. And to my opinion the best Marcus Miller CD. It is modern electric jazz with great improvising, energetic, emotional, soulful and FUNKY. The sound is recorded straight off the mixing desk and left without any editing or mixing, it kept all the energy of a live gig. Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great live album from electric bass master., April 25, 2005

"The Ozell Tapes" is a live album recorded on Marcus Miller's tour behind M2-- if you're not familiar with Marcus Miller's solo work, this is as good a place to start as any-- the majority of the material is drawn from "M2", with a few extra covers thrown in (mostly as features for vocalist Lalah Hathaway), a couple songs from "The Sun Don't Lie" and a medley of material Miller composed with Miles Davis.

The band itself has gotten into Marcus' vibe-- the core is the same band from previous tours, and they've really got a good feel for the vibe Miller sets up-- bass driven electric jazz. In particular the music excels on the pieces were Marcus's bass playing is at its most up fron ("Power", "Panther", "Nikki's Groove"), but also in some of the covers, particularly in the ones Marcus really gets in and around and turns into his own-- "So What" turns into a deep funk tune, with the familiar bass line explosively slapped and popped, "Lonnie's Lament" becomes an r&b song, and "Killing Me Softly" gets rendered stripped down as a duet between Hathaway and Miller.

Long story short, this is a great live album, even at well over two hours, it rarely drifts out of interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky, greasy, sweaty, bass plus..., May 5, 2003

An outstanding ensemble. If you've ever seen Marcus, you're not reading the reviews because you are so excited that this came out and you've already bought this. I've been a fan for a couple of years but have had this disc for about a month (through 3 deuces). Try as I might, I cannot get this disc out of my car. Marcus was here in Pittsburgh last weekend and I was lucky enough to see the show twice. The supporting cast is great, especially Poogie Bell on drums and "Patches" Stewart on trumpet, who incidentally will have a disc out soon.
Buy this, you will NOT be disappointed. I wish I could give it an extra star, it's truly THAT good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Marcus, March 2, 2004
This review is from: Ozell Tapes: The Official Bootleg (Audio CD)
This double Cd is a pretty great display of what it is like to see Marcus Miller live!
Having seen Marcus Miller live a few months back shows that seeing Marcus really live brings the real vibe. This recording cannot bring the live vibe to you as seeing Marcus live, it's not comparable.
The soundquality is so-so, the drumsound is not that good and overall it's good that this Cds are called "bootlegs".
Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars This abum's awesome, June 29, 2004
This review is from: Ozell Tapes: The Official Bootleg (Audio CD)
I love this album! Marcus Miller plays that bass so well and I like the way his band plays! Though it's only 16 songs, it makes up for it in performance. Even though it's a live album, it sounds great because it was recorded straight off of the mixing board. I am actually trying to play a couple of the songs on here because it sounds so bad and I also wanna play jazz!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my skydiving video !!!!!!!!!, August 25, 2004

I do not play an instrument. BUT listening to this CD would convince me to start with the bass (with probably no hope of ever matching Marcus's skills) I own M2. This CD incorporates a number of the tunes with other material. Never have seen him live. Tunes like Power and Miles Davis's So What demonstrate some real breadth. However, my favorite tune and the one I used for the background of my skydiving video was Nikki's Groove.

This whole CD will leave you yearning to see a live show. I can't wait to see my first one.
