Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Each book presents an environmental problem, its causes, possible scientific solutions, and ways in which readers can help. Morgan's writing is clear and informative, and the format is inviting. The numerous captioned color photographs and labeled diagrams extend the texts. Brief boxed items offer interesting related information and activities. Rain includes a diagram of the water cycle and a map reflecting acid-rain sources and problems around the world. Ozone Hole has an instructive illustration of the different layers of the earth's atmosphere as well as a computer-generated map showing ozone levels the world over. Other books deal with these topics in greater depth, but these accessible volumes should be welcome additions to collections needing additional resources.-Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA

From Booklist

This compendium in the Earth SOS series sets the stage of the ozone hole within the atmosphere, differentiates good and bad ozone, tracks back through the history of its discovery, and discusses the forces—both natural and man-made—that contribute to its existence. It’s a lot to take in, but the bite-size chunks of info make for good browsing. Sentence structure is simple; headings and fonts vary in size and boldness; white space between lines makes the text easy to follow; and colored photos with captions, diagrams, and/or fact boxes occur on each page. Most concepts are easy to understand, although the book lacks logical sequence. For instance, information about good and bad ozone and the body’s need for ultraviolet light isn’t followed by the detrimental effects of too much ultraviolet light. Includes a fact file, glossary, and index, but no further readings. Because few recent books attempt to explain ozone depletion to a younger audience, this book will likely find a home in many libraries. Grades 3-5. --J. B. More About the Author

Sally Morgan is a leading author of children's information books. She has written more than 250 titles, covering wildlife, natural history, science, geography, and environmental topics. She writes for all ages from first readers through to 16+ readership as well as books aimed at family readership.

Sally read Natural Sciences at Cambridge which was followed by several years of research into the restoration of derelict land. She then taught biology for a few years before turning to writing. With her love of the natural world and her concerns about the loss of habitats worldwide, it was not surprising that she chose to write about wildlife and environmental issues.

She is lucky enough to own a small organic farm in Somerset. When she is not writing she can be found on the farm looking after her rare breed poultry, sheep and pigs or weeding the kitchen garden! Conservation is important to her and the farm is managed to improve biodiversity. Keen to connect people with their food, Sally has set up a small education centre on the farm, where people can learn about smallholding, butchery and other rural skills.
