Book Description

Aircraft of the Aces June 5, 1998
The P-38 made its combat debut in Europe in mid-1942, the first American fighters being flown to the UK before heading further east to Twelfth Air Force units in North Africa. Its service in this theatre, and later over the heartland of Germany itself, earned the P-38 the nickname 'der gabelschwanzer Teufel' (the 'fork-tailed' devil). This volume traces the careers of many previously unknown aces within the USAAF in Europe, and helps redress the balance which has in the past seen all the 'glory' for the fighter victories in this theatre shared between the pilots of the P-47 and P-51. Some 17 pilots scored 7 or more kills on the P-38 in the ETO/MTO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quick Read on P-38 Aces, April 13, 2008

This review is from: P-38 Lightning Aces of the ETO/MTO (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 19) (Paperback)
If you like the P-38 (but don't know much about the plane) I would recommend reading a book written about the aircraft first. Once you have done that - this book is a great way to get to know the aces who flew these planes as well as their statistics. The book was very detailed regarding dates, types of enemy aircraft encountered, and total "kills". Usually, the P-38 is heavily discussed regarding its involvement in the PTO, so it was nice to read details regarding Europe and North Africa. All I can say is... wish they had put Rolls Royce engines in this baby!

This review is from: P-38 Lightning Aces of the ETO/MTO (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 19) (Paperback)
Well written and interesting. Somewhat short in the pluses and minuses of the various P38 models as they became available and in the general impact of the P38, especially in the MTO. Worth the money. A 'Buy' Recommendation.
