P-51 Mustang in Action 1981 version,
By
This review is from: P-51 Mustang in Action - Aircraft No. 45 (Paperback)
I see that Squadron has released a newer version of this - if I had to own only one book on the Mustang, I would pick this - it provides short, accurate, concise background on the Mustang and its development. Built for the Brits in 127 days, the plane was known as the A-36 Apache. Due to the Allison engine, its performance dropped off after 15,000 feet. But fortunately, someone got the bright idea to put the infamous Rolls Royce Merlin engine, and viola, a classic world beater was born. It had the range needed, power, manueverability to escort the "Big Boys" all the way to Berlin and back.
All P-51 versions are covered - P-51A through the twin Mustang, the P-82. Two pages of color plates show the Mustang's colors. Lots of line drawings show the changes in the plane as it progressed through the war and post WW2 action. Normally, In Action books have 48 pages, but this one provides an extra eight. Highly recommended for modelers and those who want an affordable intro to this classic warbird.
