Photo-Guide to the Classic P-51D!, June 26, 2008
This review is from: P-51D Mustang - Walk Around No. 7 (Paperback)
With this 'Walk Around,' #7 in the series, Larry Davis serves up an 80-page photo tribute to the legendary P-51D Mustang. As with other series titles, the emphasis is on numerous 'up-close-and-personal' shots of the aicraft in question along with nicely-done Don Greer artwork.
Typical W/A format: color pages alternate with black & white photos. Almost all of the black & white photographs in #7 are vintage images. Over half of the color pages depict the Air Force Museum's restored Mustang. (Details of the F-6 photo recce model are also included).
So, if you've ever wondered what the fuel tanks of a P-51 looked like or the shape of its coolant radiator exhaust door or the HVAR mountings underneath the wings or...or...this book is for you.
Curiously, Greer's color profiles do not always give full unit identifications. Sometimes the squadron is noted; sometimes, the group; sometimes, both squadron/group are given. Go figure.
Among the photos found in Davis' book are three snaps of NAA's Gun Test Firing Device, a fascinating device I have never seen illustrated before.
Modellers and Mustang buffs alike will enjoy this Walk Around. Recommended.
