5.0 out of 5 stars A more personal perspective, December 5, 1999
By
This review is from: A P.O.W.'s Story: 2801 Days In (Mass Market Paperback)
As the young son of an Air Force officer, I was close to the family during the period of captivity. I only wish there was more in the book of the incredible courage of the entire family. The oldest son went to Vietnam and flew as a Forward Air Controller. The wife was deeply involved in the grass-roots effort to free the POWs and I was deeply touched by her courage, devotion and faith. I once saw the middle son save a young boy after the boy was attacked by a shark. It is often difficult to identify true courage, but here is an entire family. This is a great book of courage from the courageous father of a courageous family.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book That Made Me Ill, June 21, 2000
This review is from: A P.O.W.'s Story: 2801 Days In (Mass Market Paperback)
This book takes a harsh look at the truth of life of an American POW in Vietnam. Reading the horrid things done to our POW's would make me ill at times but it also gave me an even greater respect for the people who served in the Vietnam War. Our POW's went through a lot and if you'd like to experience that first hand, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars painfully heartbreaking...wonderful, October 13, 1999
By
I have read several accounts of the Vietnam POW's and this one was the most emotional for me. I am glad that he had the courage to point out the traitorous and despicable behavior of people like Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden. What these men had to go through is in the face of such cowardice by these traitors is incomprehensible to me. God bless you Col. Guarino... your efforts are profoundly appreciated!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading and good study aid for military on psychology, June 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A P.O.W.'s Story: 2801 Days In (Mass Market Paperback)
At first I was intrigued with the facts and what extreme conditions of torture our American hero's had to go through. The worst evil that exists in the world. As I read through to the end I realized that Col. Guarino had a certain personality about his conduct which allowed him to not only survive but to minimize the ability of the V to use the POW's for their propaganda and information source. Therefore it can be used as a good study aid for military training on the psychological techniques of surviving as a POW. God Bless you Ga-ree-no those Hail Mary's must have worked. And I picked up on some humor and the military comradery that was inspiring that you found in the thick of Hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Story of a man's courage in the face of 2801 days of torture, November 9, 1997
By
This review is from: A P.O.W.'s Story: 2801 Days In (Mass Market Paperback)
Col. Guarino, a USAF F105 pilot in Vietnam, describes his treatment and recollections as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. Singled out for intense torture because he was a senior ranking officer, Col. Guarino provides an inspirational account of his confinement. Definitely a good read for anyone interested in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting account of a horrible existence as a POW, December 20, 1997
By A Customer
Col. Guarino has written a detailed account of his seven years as a POW in Vietnam. This brave man's story demonstrates both resolve, and evilness - both the good, and bad in people. This account is one of the better of the Vietnam POW books. It ranks right up there with two other good ones I have read. "In Love and War," and "Why Didn't You Get Me Out?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Larry and Evelynn, September 26, 2010
I met Larry and Evelynn and he gave me an autographed copy of his book. I had the pleasure of taking Larry and Evelynn out to dinner. We talked about his experience going back to the early days of WWII when he flew Spitfires in Italy. I met Larry over the internet as I purchased his beloved Jaguar XK8. He said Jaguars reminded him of the Spitfires he flew in WWII. I read his book over a long period of time. I could tell in meeting and talking with him he was a very detailed and literate person. Most great books take into context the daily details of which Larry captured perfectly. Its hard to fathom his ordeal but in meeting him and Evelynn it made it much more special and personal. One of the great adventures of my life. Many thanks Larry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pow's Story: 2801 Days in Hanoi, January 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this wonderful book for my son who has an avid interest in the POW experience. He just finished reading it and he loved it.
He said that he learned lots from the story and the man 'Larry Guarino's" lessons throughout the book. He found it very engaging and
read every day till he finished it just this past weekend.
