The first in 6/2009.

You should never expect a portable AC to cool as well as a window unit with the same BTU rating, as there are inherent limitations to the design.

I picked this up last year in 2010 to supplement my condo's central AC because it was in the process of going out. (Leaking evaporator core). Let me just say this thing works great, easily cooled the den that it is in and just about cooled the whole rest of my condo (about 900 square feet) with ease. I don't understand the other reviews concerning reliability issues because this thing ran all last summer just about all day and night without a hitch. I just cleaned the air filter and now using it again! One other thing I would like to mention is that the window attachment is very easy to install and is very inconspicuous from the outside for those of us that don't want anything unsightly hanging out their windows. The unit also rolls from room to room very easily if needed. Thank you Friedrich for making an excellent 2 hose unit and keep up the good work. If I ever need another one of these this will be the one.

It was between the Sharp 11,500 BTU (model# CV-2P12SX) & the Friedrich P12B. The P12B was $100.00 more then the Sharp, but I'm glad I went the extra mile. 1st, I cannot understand why some people complain that's it's loud. Mine is whisper quiet! I'm cooling appx. 400 square feet & it does this without an issue. I leave it on 70 & on low fan setting & it only takes 20-25 minutes to cool down the room. Let me start with the packaging, it was better then most IMHO. Opened it right up & no a dings or dents. The exhaust set up was a little bit of a pain to set up. Took me like 45 minutes to figure it out. The manual could have been a little better. The day I hooked it up was almost 90 degrees & humid, it works very well.

A few things I don't like is where they put the drain plug on the unit (@ the very bottom) I haven't needed to drain it yet (2 weeks now) & when you use the air conditioner only. Another thing is the 2 exhaust tubes are a tad ugly, but after awhile I simply didn't care because it's doing such a good job. Another thing is this unit is 20+ lbs. lighter then the Sharp which is a good thing if you were to move it around. I decided to purchase mine from a local dealer because I was concerned about shipping damage (paid $549.99 for mine plus no tax from NH) Warranty is a toss-up vs. the Sharp. Friedrich gives you a "limited" 5-Year (1 year you're completely covered) Sharp gives a flat 2-year.

I would have liked to purchased a Window A/C unit but my windows are too small & to get a special made window would have costed me almost $1000.00 I liive in MA. & I only need A/C for 2 months out of the year. Although both A/C units are made in China, I think Friedrich has excellent Quality Control. Friedrich always will cost you a little more, but I think it's worth it! 2 thumbs up & I highly recommend it!

I purchased this model a few days ago and it's performing in line with expectations.

You should never expect a portable AC to cool as well as a window unit with the same BTU rating, as there are inherent limitations to the design.

Even with the improved 2-hose scheme, a portable AC simply cannot dissipate heat as efficiently as a window unit can... The fan units are weaker... The exhaust hose radiates a certain amount of heat back into the room... The evaporator coil is smaller, etc.

All things being equal, these units take MUCH longer to cool down a space; and work best if they're left on all the time. You should also be prepared to tolerate a significant about of mechanical noise, as all of the machinery is the room, not on the other side of the window.

I cannot recommend this product. I've purchased three of them. The first in 6/2009. It worked very well so in 7/2009 I purchased a second unit for another area. In 4/2010 the internal fan disintegrated in the first unit. I took it to the repair center where it sat for 5 months waiting on parts. Eventually, Friedrich refunded my money on the unit because the parts could not be obtained. Since the unit was taking so long to be repaired, I purchased a third unit in 7/2010. In 9/2010, the second unit experienced the same failure. And shortly thereafter, the third unit. The design has a plastic squirrel-cage type fan that simply cannot with stand the spinning force and eventually disintegrates. And apparently it happens so much there is a shortage of replacement parts, because I'm still waiting. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of this product.

I bought this over a year ago (paid $80 more on Amazon than what it's selling for today) and like it a lot. It cools my 16 X 16 living room nicely and, so far, has never let me down (hope I didn't just jinx it). It looks stylish and is easy to operate and set up. As for noise, compared to most portable A/C's I find this one to be very quiet. Frankly I'm surprised at the negative reviews- I guess everyone has different experiences, mine has been very positive.

Most of these portable units, whether Haier or Friedrich or Frigidaire are all made in the same factory in China -each of the different vendors makes a few cosmetic changes & slaps their names onto them. They're not heavy duty commercial A/C's- they're decent residential units that will likely last at least 4-5 years (maybe longer with proper care).

It's a good unit that does the job.
