Good Total Body Workout, but not Great,
By Machine Gun "MnVols" (Minnesota State) - See all my reviews
This review is from: P90X+ TOTAL BODY PLUS with Tony Horton by Beachbody (Misc.)
I bought the entire 90X and + series the summer of 2008 thru Beachbody.com website. I really like the entire series as a whole, but the + workouts are shorter and not as intense as the original P90X series. While most of the P90X workouts were about 50 to 60 minutes long, these workouts are shorter and not as challenging. The Total Body Plus workout is about 43 minutes long with over 10 minutes of warmup and cooldown. So you have about 28 minutes of training and breaks included. This is a all in 1 total body workout: abs, shoulders, back, legs, and chest. Tony takes you through all the routines, and drives you crazy constantly repeating "This ain't no dance routine, this is P90X+!" This is a shorter but challenging workout that works the entire body. Tony introduces new moves and variations of pushups and pullups, that made me think I hadn't done that before. You have a variety of routines that both need and don't need weights. I especially like the 2 minute pushup, pullup combos that you do twice during the workout. It's a good change up to your routine, and very good for men and women who want a short and moderately intense workout. I gave it only 3 stars, because it doesn't pack the punch of the original workouts. I only do it about once every two weeks now to change things a bit. On the other hand, my wife likes it very much and does it about twice a week. As I stated earlier, the Plus series production value and the workouts aren't as good as the P90x series. I personally like the harder and longer routines, but this ideal for someone wanting a total body workout in less than 40 minutes. All in all, this is a good workout but just a bit too short for myself.

I really like the resistance workouts in the P90X Plus series. They are shorter than the P90X workouts (Total Body is 45:30), but it is a quicker pace and has a different attitude and tempo. I also think they are equally if not more intense than P90X despite being shorter. A lot of the exercises are timed rather than maximum reps, so it can be a challenge to push yourself to finish the move in the allotted time. They test your endurance as well as strength. The warm-up incorporates moves that would be in the regular workout in the P90X series like push-ups and dive bombers. The exercises also take old P90X moves and put an advanced spin on them. For example, Pull-up crunches are a chin-up where you raise your knees to the bar. There is a one-minute exercise called Sumo Chair where you jump from a squat position into a chair position (those wear me out!). It also incorporates what I like to call "stations." In the 3 & 3 exercise, you do 3 squats with weights then do 3 push-ups and then rush to the pull-up bar to do 3 pull-ups and then it's back to the squats and so on until the time runs out. I call them stations because it's like moving from one stations (i.e. the squat station) to the next. I guess there is a little cardio involved if you move fast enough. I like to mix it up and alternate wide, military, standard, pike press push-ups and wide, close grip, reverse grip, side of the head (using the bars that jut out) pull-ups. There is also a 1 & 1 exercise where you do just one push-up and then one pull-up and can mix that one up, too. All the weight exercises are demonstrated with bands and dumbbells. These workouts just fly by. I wish there were more people involved like in P90X for variety. In P90X Plus, all workouts are done with Traci Morrow and Mark Briggs (and Tony, of course).

Shorter workouts but made more intense!,

Wow these workouts do pack a punch. The upper body leaves me wiped and the total body is just as much of a cardio workout for me as a strength workout. Interval X+ is a great workout and on, if not above par, when compared to plyometerics. I stopped doing the Kenpo X+ since it really isn't much a cardio workout for me but the total body more than makes up for it. The Core workout is OK and I substitute it often with Ab Ripper X but it is a nice change of pace. Overall, compared to the original P90X this plus workout routine definetly is more calorie burning. The workout may be shorter but the intensity more that compensates. These workout will be excellent to use if you plan on making hybrid workout. I plan on reusing this workout the the 90 day before next summer as a cutting/leaning routine.
