Product Description

Port-A-Cool PACCYC02 Cyclone Portable Evaporative Cooling Unit

The Port-A-Cool PACCYC02 Portable Evaporative Cooling Unit is one of most efficient ways to keep cool, indoors or out. The large airflow capacity allows for superior cooling that can cover up to 500 square feet lowering the temperature up to 30 degrees. This unit has a 10-gallon reservoir, which can be manually filled and provides 6 hours of runtime. The PACCYC02 uses an all-natural tap water with no harmful refrigerants to keep indoor and outdoor spaces cool. Heavy-duty casters make it portable and easy to move. You can rely on the PACCYC02 for all your cooling needs during those hot months. Shipped completely assembled and ready to operate, right out of the box, and it operates for a fraction of the cost of A/C.

What is Evaporative Cooling?

Remember the chill of getting out of a swimming pool on a hot day? That's evaporative cooling. Evaporative cooling units create this natural effect and provide a constant flow of cool, refreshing air into hot, uncomfortable environments. The heart of an evaporative cooling system is the evaporative pad. A pump pushes water over the pads and a fan pulls the air through the pads. The water evaporates within the pads and the air passing through the pads is cooled. This unit does not produce mist, promote rusting or wet surfaces.

Technical Specifications
  • 3/4-inch hose connection and centrifugal air delivery system
  • Constructed of one-piece, rust free, leak proof polyethylene for tough environments
  • Unit measures 24 inches by 25 inches by 31 inches
  • Unit weighs 61 pounds and does not use fan blades

Evaporative cooling

An All-Natural and Energy Efficient Cooling Technique

Evaporative cooling units use regular tap water and 120-volt power with no harmful refrigerants. It is easy to use and maintain, and you can use it in conjunction with an air conditioner to boost the cooling. Evaporative cooling units are highly effective in climates where the air is hot and the humidity is low. In dry, arid climates, the use of evaporative cooling is more cost effective than traditional cooling methods.

We would definitely recommend it for dogs and horses.

I don't hesitate to let this unit run all day as it only uses a couple of amps on 115V (very low electricity use compared to an AC unit).

Another thing I've noticed is not all the pads are getting water filtered through it so it's not cooling as much as it's supposed to.

The Cyclone 2000 is the smallest of the Port-A-Cool (PAC) product line, and clearly it's the design and convenience that warrants their rather high purchase price and not because of any generous amount of high grade hardware being used for its assembly. I'll elaborate on that later but first, regardless of how these PACs are advertised, they are still swamp coolers and serve well in drier climates by whisking cool evaporated water into the air, and since I live in the dry, dry desert and have access to every PAC model in production, these are definitely better than the average evaporative coolers. They are swamp coolers on steroids, ranging from this smallest unit all the way up to the new mega-buck and hair raising Hurricane! So anything with the Port-A-Cool label on it is going to have superior cooling when compared to the less expensive KuulAire products. But be sure of what you are about to purchase because you can save a few hundred dollars if one of the smaller units is adequate and you don't really need the high volume of air flow that are common to these PACs. I never heard of anyone cooling the outside air before until becoming familiar with these units, and it is true. They will keep you cool, and people just love to keep one of the smaller PAC units pointed in their direction all the time while they are working either inside or outside.
I received my Cyclone 2000 several months before actually putting it into service. Upon finally removing it from its shipping box and hooking up power and a water hose, it wouldn't work, but I could hear a distinct hum from the motor. I pulled it completely apart and discovered a bent motor mount was causing the squirrel cage to rub up against its housing.

I'm using it in a 680 sq-ft garage/shop which is larger than recommended for the Cyclone 2000. I leave the garage door open about 2 ft so it pulls in outside air.

The temp drop is dramatic. When it's 100F outside the air coming from the portacool is in the high 70's. I'm in Dallas, TX, so the air is fairly low humidity which is essential for making this type of cooler work. Since the unit is really too small for the space, I have to direct it towards the space that I work in but I don't consider that an issue. I've found that it isn't very good at cooling off a space that is already hot. If I wait until the afternoon and turn it on, it will help but it will still be hot in the shop. Best way to use it is to turn it on in the morning and let it run all day. If I do that, the shop is very livable even in the afternoon.

So in summary: It is not an air conditioner. As long as it is used for what it was designed for it's very effective and can keep a space livable, though not 100% comfortable, even on a hot day. And it will do it at a fraction of the running cost of AC. I don't hesitate to let this unit run all day as it only uses a couple of amps on 115V (very low electricity use compared to an AC unit).

This item worked as described. I got a 10 degree split in the Temp. We sit on the back porch and 85 feels much cooler than 95. A side advantage is it greatly reduces the flies bothering your time outside. Would have given a 5 star rating if it had side to side adjustment.

I have the Cyclone 2000 and it works great. However, when Fed Ex delivered it upside down on my porch, I knew something was likely to be broken and it was. The good news is that after removing the filters, I could see that the pump was in 3 pieces at the bottom and the hose was disconnected. After I put everything back together, it worked great and continues to work well. These units are not made to handle rough shipping and at over 60 lbs., it was obviously handled roughly.

To work properly, you have to make sure that the water flow is set properly or it will not cool as well as it should. If you back the water valve down so that the evaporator pad looks almost dry on the outside with a few wet streaks, it will cool better. The pads are about 6 inches thick, so while it may appear dry on the outside it will still be damp on the inside. You have to experiment with it to get it right. After a few tries, it is simple to adjust and it works great now. I use it on my patio and it does make a difference.

Makes 100+ degree days bearable in a single bay, or small shop.
The larger version (48") worgs great in larger shops. We have 14-bays, and 2-units make a noticable difference. Makes it 'livable' on the really hot days.

We live in Texas and rescue Great Pyrenees. They suffer all summer with the extreme heat. We finally decided to purchase a port-a-cool and were anxious to see if my dogs would use it. To my surprise, they would lay right in front of it to enjoy the cooler air. We would definitely recommend it for dogs and horses.

We were satisfied with our purchase; however, after receiving and reading the information, we discovered that there is a 'break-in' period. We have only used it once and therefore expect that after this break-in period, it should result in cooler air flow. Our use was on an open porch while cooking on the grill on an extremely hot Texas day. It gave relief at the time and should be 'better with age.
