First off, lens cap fits like a champ. The 3 pieces extend all the way out so there is no vignetting on the photos.

But the real five stars goes to the seller. After an initial poor review (b/c of my own stupidity not knowing you need to unscrew the seal around the lens of the camera to get this new cap on), GOJA called me to make sure everything was cool and even offered to send out a new cap just in case it was the manufacturer's fault. Followed up w/ me a couple of days later too.

Really great to know the seller has my back, and I will always look to his store first before buying first.

A++++ experience.

This automatic lens cap works well, just as the ones on the LX3 and LX5 did. Once you know how it goes on, it's actually much better than the threaded caps for the earlier models.

On the end of the lens HOUSING for the LX7 (not the lens, the outer housing) there's a thin knurled ring just past the aperture ring. If you grasp that thin ring and give it about 1/6 turn counterclockwise (rock it a little if it doesn't want to turn), it will come off so you can install the lens cap. After it stops turning counterclockwise, just pull outward lightly and rock it a bit. It's a quick-release bayonet-type connection, not a threaded connection.

Some of the online forums have made this confusing, as they refer to it as a threaded ring at the end of the lens. DON'T twist the extended lens, you'll possibly damage it. The lens housing is what holds this ring (see the photo I posted on the auto lens cap page). It is not threaded, and twisting hard shouldn't be necessary, just twist lightly but firmly counterclockwise and rock it back and forth if it doesn't turn at first. The ring has little notches so you can get a good grip.

Most of us early LX7 owners thought they would not be able to make an auto cap for this, since no one knew about the ring coming off. I was happy to see that this was available and that it does work; even though it's not as much protection as the stock lens cap against dust etc., it's much more convenient and quick when you need it.

I bought a version of this on Ebay(same price, but i paid a little extra for a sun hood combo). I think this cap is a highly practical add-on to the LX5. Removing/attaching the default lens cap was a nuisance. In the spur of the moment, i don't want to fuss with a lens cap.

Installation is a little tricky, the fine threads don't always engage on the first try. I tend to rotate it counterclockwise first, then clockwise (helps me to line-up the threads). DO be careful about cross-threading the plastic threads on the cap.

About the flap gaps, they are present and would eventually allow dust and pocket lint onto the lens. To remedy, I carefully layered on some super glue onto the edges of the flaps, to reduce the gaps between the flaps. Work on one flap at a time and with the cap off the camera. Layer the glue onto each edge, thinly. If you layer it on too thick, then you can just file it down. You only have to do this to two of the flaps. File the super glue to eliminate any interference between the flaps' edges.
It's an easy modification and will reduce the amount of dust/lint that might get in.

The flap springs are my only concern with the product, I hope they hold up over the next couple of years. I have owned this cap for 2months now.

I do recommend this product to all LX5 owners. Especially for travelers. For long storage or shipping, the stock cap would provide more protection.

I purchased this hoping that it would solve my problem with the annoying lenscap. While it screws on easily and opens and closes as advertized, the gaps between the three leaves are huge. The gaps are large enough that I sand, lint, and just about anything you would NOT want on your lens would easily contact your lens through these gaps. If you purchase this, hold the closed lens cap to the light and notice how large the gaps are, then decide of you want this "protecting" your lens. I hoped I could adjust it to make the three leaves fit tighter but to no avail. It's a great idea but it simply doesn't work at protecting the lens.

This lens cap works well for those that don't want to have a "normal" lens cap hanging off of the camera when shooting (wind flopping it around). However, it does leave a small gap between the three flaps so dust, sand, etc will get in.
User will have to decide what is more important (not leaving a lens cap dangling or not fully protecting the lens when closed).

I am using these unique lens caps, purchased at Amazon, on a Panasonic DMC LX5 and DMC LX7. This lens cap is perhaps the best I have ever used in 40+ years of photography. IMHO, point & shoot cameras, small in design, present more challenges in taking the lens cap on and off than larger DSLRs. There's more to grab onto with the larger cameras. This lens cap is attached permanently to the lens by carefully removing the front retaining ring of the lens. I know it may sound silly, but I used a solid-piece jar top opener to gently remove the front retaining ring of each lens. (I also placed each individual front retaining ring in a separate ZipLock bag and put a label on each bag.) After removing the retaining ring, screw on the lens cap and don't over tighten. It is a little difficult to get the threads lined up, at least is was for me with both cameras. Now you never have to worry about removing the lens cap or putting it back on because the lens pushes open the three pie-shaped sections of the lens cap at start up and the 3 pieces go back down to protect the lens when the camera is turned off. There is no vignetting, and the opening and closing of the lens cap doesn't hurt the lens. I was out in a boat doing a photography job for a web site in the Intracoastal Waterway between Boynton Beach and Jupiter, FL several days ago. When I wasn't shooting, or when some waves were coming our way, I simply turned off the LX5 and the lens cap immediately protected the lens. I purchased several leather cases for my two LX 5s, and they covered the lens cap beautifully. The cap is slightly larger for the Panasonic LX7 and I am going to purchase an additional case that will accept the larger size. When I find one, I will post it on this review.
