Pancrase was NOT modern MMA,

This review is from: PANCRASE Alive Tour Vol.1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Don't let the uninformed reviewer sway your opnion. Pancrase rules were based on the ancient olympic sport of Pancration, which allowed only empty hand strikes. The 'boots' are in fact shin guards and foot guards, which in theory made it easier to go for heel hooks and the like.. sweaty foot = easy slipping. Although Pancrase was mostly Submission wrestling, many fighters were great at throwing KO kicks. Heck, Bas Rutten could do a KO with a palm strike! In 1998, Pancrase adopted pure MMA rules, but during its unique existance it proved to be a nice escape from standard MMA. By the way, Pancrase predated UFC. Here is a brief history of the promotion. Oh, and the crowd is so quiet because the Japanese fans have manners and dont boo any time a fight hits the ground or is 'slow'. PRIDE FC fans are also very considerate and respect the martial artists, unlike many American fans.In 1993 Masakatsu Funaki, Minoru Suzuki, Yusuke Fuke and others from the Fujiwara Gumi wrestling promotion left that company, apparently in opposition to mentor Yoshiaki Fujiwara cooperating with leagues like Universal Lucha Libre and W*ING, where showmanship was the rule. These men formed Pancrase, which would focus on pure shoot style wrestling with few gimmicks and no predetermined outcome

First off.....they just kinda look funny in their little pro wrsetling style outfits....this makes them hard to take seriously. The crowd is also eerily quite...almost spooky in fact. You're better off spending your dosh on something else like a PRIDE ,King of the Cage or UFC event.
