3.0 out of 5 stars A Social Study of the American Auto Industry, May 8, 2009
At a time when the American and perhaps the world auto industry is going through convolutions this book may have renewed appeal. The author' point is that the US auto industry's early success was a result of "social and institutional partiality", the government at taxpayer cost built roads and provided tax subsidies, jobs and cities were dispersed...
Presciently writing in 1973 she says that social and technical changes underway will challenge the auto industry: fewer people will go to work in large factories, fewer children per family will reduce the appeal of suburban life, more people will live and work in clusters, improved telecommunication...all will reduce the demand for personal transportation.
The author is a well known historian of science and technology and has taught at MIT, Oxford and is currently Professor of history at Harvard
