This umbrella stand seems to be heavy duty ( but not too heavy that you can't pick it up and move it around... I need a forklift for my other one). The base is metal, but the shaft is plastic. Either way, it seems to be very sturdy. The reason I gave this 4 stars was really my fault... I did not measure the height and diameter of the shaft needed for my tet-a-tet set (sm. table/chair combo). This umbrella stand would not fit. So, I just did a little re-engineering, and now it works! All I can say is: "measure first, then buy..."
