Overall I am very pleased with this card, and I get an even better signal with this card than I ever did with the older WMP54G.

That's the kind of simple life I'd like to have... So I returned the card, and rate it as 1 star.

I'm from the old school that products should work as intended, without fuss and without undue attention, and this PCI Express wireless work card is just that, a workhorse that allow you networking freedom, without the need to think about your networking.

First, let's look at the hardware. You will not know much about actual networking hardware until you actually install it, but my (Windows 7) device manager tells me that this card is powered by a Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless chip. Good or bad, you know what you'll be using.

I will first tell you that I use 802.11g, and have been for years. I have not found the need to step up to 801.11N as my own wireless speed has not seem slow, even in wireless mode. My installation was very simple.

1. Install the wireless card while the computer is unplugged;
2. put everything back, power the computer back and go to device manager.
3. right click on the wireless card icon (in network adapters), select "update driver software", then with the included CD in place, browse to the location of the driver included (like D:\Driver\Win7_64\) and let the computer add the device driver (don't bother with any setup).
4. Set up the wireless networking with your own authentication credentials.

I am going to add a tip for everyone, because I don't know why Asus has configured their driver configuration in a less than maximum performance mode. First, go back to your device manager after you have everything all setup, and you have network connectivity.

When you right click on the wireless networking device, and select "Properties", go to the "Advanced" tab and do the following:

1. Go to the "Roaming Sensitivity Level" and Disable it.

Hardware Installation = Easy, but if you can't install a wireless card of any variety, you shouldn't be buying this anyway.

Software Installation = Easy, but the included Asus management software is awful, and cuts the bandwidth in half. Just use windows management.

My ipad, iphone, and win7 laptop next to this computer with this card all get 28mb download / 5 mb upload internet speed on speedtest.net. On the same access point, in the same location, this card was struggling to average 2.3mb down and 4mb up.

Used tcpoptimizer on the card to see if that helped, minimal improvement.

Adjusted settings to not use power management and always use 100% power from the device manager in Windows 7. No improvement.

There are better cards out there apparently; the speed on this one won't be sufficient for any kind of power user.

**Updated

I pointed the antenna straight out instead of upright and speed improved to 21.6mb download and 4.6mb upload. I have this in a slim desktop case. Not really practical to have it pointed like this, but it did help immensely with signal.

Seems to be a software issue, but there seems to be no upgrades for the device, not too happy with this situation!

Bought for use with my Win XP desktop with a FIOS G router.. Connection speed was slow between 1.0 to 3.0 mpbs and my network is at 25mpbs. Tried changing several setting using Windows Wireless mgmt still could not correct issue. Laptop running wireless connected at 23.0 mpbs. Contacted Asus tech support but they were not really helpful at all. Returning the card.

Installed card, PC detected it immediately, pointed it to the CD for drivers and configured it for my wireless network...maybe 5 minutes? No issues; excellent signal strength on 2nd floor with router on 1st floor, approximately 60 feet away. And thanks S. Chen for the tips on setup! (Window Vista and connecting to an old WRT54G...ready for 802.11n when she gives up the ghost.)
