As computers advance, you see less RS232 ports available in a typical PC. You may need these ports for various tasks, such as connecting card readers, elder hardware, etc. To make situation even worse, computer manufacturers limit amount of available PCI slots, so you can't just plug in extension card. Only choice is to get PCI-E RS232 card, which is still quite uncommon.

The card reviewed has 2 external and 2 internal slots, which means, that besides the external devices, you can connect also internal devices to it, such as card readers. Previous reviewer complains that there was no information how to connect internal connectors correctly. This is wrong. If you look at PCB, you'll see small white triangle near the each connector. This is the marking, where the red stripe on connection cable should be matching. This is rule of thumb in PC world for last 20 years at least, so if you need such a specific device, than you should know also connection pinouts.

The driver installation went OK, and card itself works properly.

I use this thing for my Cisco switches, and it works fine for what I need. I am currently running Ubuntu 10.04. The Linux drivers that came from the Syba website and the CD were both outdated. Luckily for me, I found Startech drivers for the item PEX4S552, which is practically the same thing as the SY-PEX-4S. It's even based on the same chipset, so the driver install went very smoothly.

I was glad I didn't have to return the thing, but I'm pretty disappointed that I had to look to another vendor to get the right drivers to get this thing working. I even emailed their tech support for help, but they didn't give me any response. That's why this thing gets such a low score. I don't know if I'm gonna look to Syba for anymore purchases.

It was just to much trouble to get it to work , so it was returned.
The supplied drivers did not work on my Win 7 system. I e-mailed the local (USA) customer service folks , got an answer back in a few days, and they told me that they had sold the product line to a company in Asia. That Asian company did have some updated drivers available which I did not try , because , by that time , I have spent enough time trying to get it to work , gave up and returned it.
I solved the problem of not having enough RS 232 ports by using USB to Serial converters which I purchased fro Amazon, and they worked.
The product return process with Amazon was very efficient and professional.
