Gr 7 Up--A clearly written and well-organized overview. The authors begin with an examination of the history of drug abuse and identify four categories of commonly abused drugs, including PCP, which fits into all four categories. They then trace the development, testing, accepted medical use, and ultimate illegalization of PCP. A list of the drug's many street names along with charts that explain the legal penalties for drug trafficking are included. A thorough description of the stages of PCP intoxication, its effects on neurotransmitters, and the difficulties of treatment are presented. An extensive state-by-state listing of "Where to Go for Help" is appended. Black-and-white photos, some of which seem dated, along with charts, maps, and diagrams, appear throughout. The text is well documented and cites many research studies conducted since the publication of Marilyn Carroll's PCP (Chelsea House, 1985). A solid combination of science, history, statistics, and sociology, this title should be a useful addition for most libraries.
