Compatible with Sprint cell phone service, the sleek silver Nokia 3588 sports CDMA2000 1X technology for high-speed data transmission, a large, high-resolution color display, a built-in GPS (global positioning system), and much more.

Using the new open standard CDMA2000 1X chipset solution, this phone can offer peak data transfer rates of 3-5 Mbps and a typical throughput rate of 1 Mbps in a 1.25 MHz frequency channel. It also lets users perform two high-value tasks at once, such as downloading e-mail from a corporate server while talking on another line, so you can maximize your time even when you're not at your desk.

As a phone, the 3588 provides voice dialing for up to 25 numbers, voice commands for up to 8 menu items, plus up to one minute's worth of memo recording. You can also choose from 45 enhanced musical MIDI ring tones, and download up to 10 more from the Web using the phone's internal wireless modem.

As an organizer, the 3588 lets users enjoy a 500 contact phonebook, with multiple numbers and text entries per contact, and a full calendar that lets you save meeting, birthday, and other reminder information. You can also synchronize your phone book, calendar, and to-do list with your PC using Nokia 3588i PC Suite (which requires data cable DKU-5, sold separately). There's even an alarm clock with snooze, and a vibrating alert.

For quick written communication, this phone provides text messaging and predictive text entry. It also includes a nifty GPS device that lets location-based emergency services find you. And, as on most new Nokia phones, it's TTY/TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) compatible, providing hearing aid support with the LPS-4 loopset (not included). For the color-coordinated, Nokia also offers a variety of Xpress-on color covers (sold separately) so you can change both the front and back plate color of your phone. Three video games are included with this phone: Sky Diver, Racket, and Bowling.

The Nokia 3588 measures 4.68 x 1.96 x .92 inches, and weighs 4.1 ounces. Its 1000 mAH Li-Ion Battery is rates at up to 3 hours digital talk time and up to 12 days digital standby time. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Before buying this phone, i had some doubts. It's not a cool gadget like most of the Sanyo and Samsung phones are, but on the other hand, those other phones are much more expensive and they don't provide really 'must-have' features.
After buying this phone i can say now that it was a great choice. This Nokia phone easily beats Sanyo 8100 and the Samsung phone i had before, in all departments. While the 8100 looks like a tech wonder, the 3588 does the job a cell phone should do. Clearer calls (even though, the displayed signal looks weaker than on 8100! very weird), very good sound quality, very intuitive menu and a clean color display.
In terms of goodies, the 3588 comes with 3 games (only one really worth playing), polyphonic rings (some really good ones) and a couple wallpapers.
Overall, if all you need is a great cell phone, i strongly recommend this one. It may not be the hottest toy out there, but it is one of the best phones Sprint has.

Due to a software issue between Nokia and Sprint this phone's text messaging capabilities don't work with Sprint's system and won't until a software patch comes out "some time in the next few months". You will have to spend at least 1 hour with Sprint's award winning customer service team to find someone who will admit this to you.

The problem is that Nokia designed their phones so that incoming messages are retrieved quickly and then viewed "offline" the way most providers work. Sprint, however, likes to have people hook up to their server first and then stay connected, burning minutes while they check their inbox, compose a reply and wait for the Sprint server to respond so they can send it out.

Innovation in money-making at its finest.

I just got this phone on January 12, 04. I have enjoyed it ever since. I replaced my old Qualcom 2760 with this Nokia 3388i.

Pros: Has all the bells & whistles
Great signal strength even in basement
BRIGHT display and very loud ringer
Ease of use and navigation through the menus
3-way calling feature is very easy to use
Very clear with earpiece(use a standard earpiece)
Voice dialing capability
An empty battery is fully charged in exactly 2hours
Battery talk time lasts about 2.5 hours
...many other nifty tools

Cons: Volume is very small without using the earpiece attachment
(best use with an earpiece)
No Camera
No Speaker phone
Limited ring tones and background images.
The ring tones and background images are poor and no good!
Can not add additional ring tones nor background images

Overall the phone is splendid functionally and very good for its price. If you want a good phone and are not particular about the ring tones and background images then I strongly recommend getting this phone. It is light weight, has good reception, clear sound, and has many additional features/tools.
