The PDR consists of commercially-available package inserts from drugs prescribed in the United States and a photo index of pills. It has indices in the front of the book so you can look up drugs by generic or brand name. But don't count on finding the drug in question. Surprisingly, it omits a number of common drugs that are available as generics. Doctors use the PDR (which is shipped to our offices free each year) to identify pills (the photo guide is pretty good) and to determine dosages, interactions and side-effects.

But you can do better. As an intern I found the AHFS guide to be easier to search, more comprehensive, and better organized. You may learn more about your medicines from the AHFS but may need someone to decode the medicalese; I think that it is worth the extra effort.

Oh, and if you want to look up eye meds, you need the PDR for Ophthalmology.

I would pick up a used copy and flip through before you purchase.

This was the first time I ordered anything from Amazon. This book would have cost me approximately $100.00 from the book store. I bought this PDR for $19.95 plus a little shipping. I was very impressed with the condition of the book. It appeared to be new. I was also impressed that it was shipped immediately. I ordered on a Thursday and received it an the following Monday. Comprehensive is not an praise-worthy enough term to describe this book.As a collector of reference books and a college student,this book is second-to-none in terms of depth and volume,plus its easy to read and understand.Excellent addition to any reference and/or medical library.

I bought this for a retired Dr, who is a family member, who really wanted this. At the time I ordered, 12/09 Amazon mentioned there might be a delay in shipping. To my delight, the book came two days later, well before the holiday.

I (think) PDR's are sent to active Dr's free, and financed by the drug firms - the family member in question really missed his copy, and it was nice to be able to find one at Amazon.

Price was outstanding as well, all I saw in local bookstores was the 2009 version for $25 MORE than what Amazon priced the new 2010 version for!

I think this is nice for anyone to have, to have a good understanding of medications they might be on. The average non-medical person might not need one every year, but it is certainly handy to have around the house.

Has detailed info on drugs listed but lacks many and can be hard to use. Overall is def worth having. On shelf.

This purchase from Amazon was just as promised. The condition was used but good and it arrived in about a week. I bought this book for a friend who was without internet access, and she was pleased that I could help her.

The condition of the PDR was and is excellent the delivery was within the time stated. The price was very good.

For anyone truly serious about hands-on medicine, this is a treasure trove of information about how the drug should work, contraindications, and full-color pictures.
