To be a coal miner was to constantly be putting your life at risk. Not only are the conditions extreme, dirty, and exhausting but the constant risk of cave-ins is an everyday reality for those that toil underground in search of coal. Shown is a miner from the Pennsylvania Coal Company around the turn of the century. The miner leads his pony and cart as they carry a load of black gold towards the surface. Dirt and soot not only cover the men but cover the tired looking pony as they take a short rest in the dark underbelly of the mine. This print is an excellent visual aid reference for those studying the coal mining industry around the turn of the century.
