We bought these for my son and he loves them. They are made well and he runs twice as fast and jumps twice as high.

Classic shoes, September 28, 2007
I usually wear `80s-style running shoes, but this summer I wanted to go even more retro and get some canvas high tops. Converse and some of the other better-known brands had some flashy styles and patterns that looked fun, but when I actually checked them out in-store I was amazed at how noticeably shoddy even the models on display were: the foxing (side rubber strip) and toes were poorly vulcanized and looked like they'd start separating in weeks, not months, and most of the soles were made of a hard rubber with a strange flocked treatment that looked and felt dangerously slippery.
So in the end, for about $5 more than my local store was selling Chuck Taylors, I went with the PF Flyers Center Hi. These are visibly better-made than most of the canvas sneakers I've seen in stores, and a good deal more comfortable. They look as though they'd be narrow, but the toe is surprisingly roomy. I have to stick in some orthopedic arch supports for my high arches, but otherwise the insole is well-padded and comfortable. If you're used to shoes with thick EVA midsoles like the Reebok Classic running shoes (which I also love), they take awhile to get used to, but you'll love them once you do.
After getting these, I recommend looking around online for sites with alternate lacing methods, both for fun and more practical reasons. For instance, I use a wider criss-cross pattern to make them fit comfortably around my higher instep.
Also, a nice little touch: pull out the insoles and look in your shoes for a little green square of fabric...
