The boost in refresh rate is also very noticeable.

Color reproduction is great for a TN because this panel is an 8-bit panel, most TNs are 6-bit.

For a $800 TN panel monitor I expect near perfection with everything except for the obvious TN flaws. Unfortunately this monitor has all the negatives of a TN + other problems as well.

Lets start with the positives:

The build quality of this monitor is exceptional. The stand feels extremely sturdy, rotating the screen, pivoting it, everything feels exactly how I would expect a $800 product to feel. The face of the monitor itself is absolutely stunning as the screen stretches nearly the entire length with minimal bezel. The back is elegantly designed while maximizing airflow across the components inside. I've read that ASUS overclocked the G-Sync module inside and fitted it with a larger then standard heatsink. Regardless the monitor doesn't really get hot after long gaming sessions so their cooling design is great.

The picture quality when not in motion is also extremely good. I calibrated the screen with a Spyder3 + DispCal and honestly the end result isn't much different then how it came from the factory. The colors are excellent, far better then the BenQ 2420T I came from. Contrast isn't as good as a high end IPS but it's far better than all my previous TN panels. Horizontal viewing angles are good, vertical are meh. I expected this going into it knowing it's a TN panel though, so I wasn't surprised. 1440p @ 27" is absolutely incredible, not only does it improve the usability of Windows and apps with more space to work, but it definitely provides a greater level of detail in games.

G-Sync is also very good. Initially I had a problem getting it working. My setup is a GTX690 + 750Ti, when the 750Ti is enabled though, G-Sync caps framerates and causes severe stuttering. After disabling the 750Ti G-Sync worked beautifully.

So, let's start out with the pros:
- G-Sync.
- 144Hz
- ULMB
- PWM-free
- Fast pixel response times.
Some of the smoothest gaming I've ever done... on an LCD anyway. The gaming on this thing was great (I had all monitors for a combined time of probably one-two weeks). ULMB is very noticeable when reading scrolling text/images (go to blurbusters and do one of their benchmarks) and definitely eliminates blurring. G-Sync is great for any game where you don't need utter elimination of blurring, but you want smoothness of gameplay (ie no stutter and tearing). It works beautifully in AC4.

Now, let's get into the cons.

Here are the cons:
- Usual TN panel cons (I list those at the bottom)
- Only one input. You're not doing any console gaming on this, ever. Unless it's through an emulator.
- Various Nvidia driver problems. I occasional got "Signal out of Range", my screen just turning black, blue screens, and other various fun little things happening, especially on my first panel.
- The anti-glare coating is bad. It's not as bad as the U2711 from Dell (which I returned because of the coating alone), but it is bad. ASUS should have used the Qnix anti-glare coating for this monitor, which was literally one of the most perfect balances I have ever seen.

Oh, and the deal breaker:
- QUALITY CONTROL!!
- QUALITY CONTROL!!
- QUALITY CONTROL!!
(three lines for three trials)

The con is so major and pissed me off so much across my THREE TRIALS at getting a decent panel that I believe this actually literally deserves to take off four stars. I only took off three because gaming on it was at least good.

To start, I'm coming from a 6 year old dell and have never owned an IPS but have used them. That being said, this monitor is nearly flawless to me. I have no dead pixels and have had 1 issue with waking after sleep but that was resolved after I installed the driver.

Beside having to put the brightness at 20% or so, calibration was minimal and is by far the best TN I've ever seen.

If you can afford the price of admission it's worth every penny in my eyes and I doubt you'll be disappointed. I also don't see an equivalent monitor coming out for quite awhile.

As far as performance, i play with minor AA or even off depending on the game and still see well over 60 FPS averages in most modern games.

4770k @ 4.2/GTX780 ti @ 1100

EDIT-9/16
Started to get the out of sync error more and more now. Also reverts back to 60fps when opening certain games and I have to manually change the monitor with the turbo button. Also noticed a splotch appear on the right half during black screens. Everything else about the picture is still far above other TN panels, and I can even live with a little backlight bleed but the out of sync error is quite annoying and can happen at pretty much anytime and really makes me consider returning it......

Very hard to get the ASUS PG278Q right now due to supply constraints, but if you get one you will be amazed and satisfied with this monitor. I managed to get mine from Amazon when they restocked, but they sold out again real fast.

First off it is an 8bit TN panel, which gets a bad rep for having color inaccuracies versus an IPS panel. But for an TN panel the colors are pretty accurate right out of the box! As both a gamer and a photographer I am often torn between the two panel technologies and I'm pleased to have finally found a good middle ground so I don't have to switch monitors constantly. While the color may not quite up to IPS, its close enough to do photography work, and certainly good enough for gaming.

The stand is very adjustable height, pivot, tilt and as a whole the monitor is very light. The monitor barely puts off any heat, more heat comes from the external power supply. I actually prefer to have the power supply external, as its easier to replace the power supply if its external than internal to the monitor, a nice touch if you ask me. I just wish the A/C power cord to the power brick was a bit longer, the DC side is long enough however.

Now for the gaming portion of the review. This monitor has given me a new appreciation of gaming. The gsync works very well and has smoothed out my gameplay tremendously. I am currently running a Intel 3770k with a pair of EVGA 770s in SLI @ 2560 x 1440 and have zero issues. I run with gsync on and experience no page tearing, no stutter and not even the dreaded SLI micro stutter. Gaming has become pleasant once again. Gsync currently only works in FULL SCREEN gaming. Not windowed full screen, not windowed mode... FULL SCREEN only. That is a bit of a drawback, but may change in the future.
