Be advised, this collection of photographs privileges Italian photographers (the editor is Italian) and it contains an inordinate amount of images of naked women. Seems rather gratuitous. Otherwise, text is smart and informative. Image quality is good.

My friend is in love with it and continues to tell me so. I think it's great that on the left side they give you a bit of information about the photographer and the circumstances to which the photo was taken and on the right side is the actual photo. I'm glad I purchased this for her :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift Book, April 25, 2011
By
dream factory (Triangulum, M33) - See all my reviews
This review is from: PHOTO:BOX (Hardcover)
We are all familiar with the quintessential photo book titled "the photo book" put forth by Phaidon. It remains a 1997 classic. Here we see more of the same. Hundreds of stunningly beautiful photographs spanning decades, cultures, and photo-genres. 250 selections keep you turning pages in excitement and awe. Returning to this book over and over again.

A bazaar of events, objects, landscapes, and faces. Faces, is what sets this book apart from Phaidons book. Hundreds of expression laden photos bring forth moods that swing from holocaust and terror, to authentic beauty and eroticism.

Wherein Phaidon had a short one paragraph description of each photographer and photo, here there is a healthy long story about each shot followed by a very satisfying bio of the photographer.

When you buy a particular photographers collection you hope to see maybe a dozen really good photographs. With this book you're gonna see 250 great photographs. Many of which will have you going to the library looking for more.......PS; a great gift book for that artsy interesting person in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars One page of description accompanied by a photo, December 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PHOTO:BOX (Hardcover)
Exactly what I was looking for. It has the right amount of information to get you familiar with the photographer and to decide whether he/she is worth further research. I didn't want to be overwhelmed by too much detail about all the photographer's achievements, and instead I wanted a book that focused more on the photos and that is what this book does. Great quality, both the content and the actual construction of the book. Even my dad, who is very particular about his books, enjoyed flipping through it and occasionally stopping to read to what caught his interest.

A great buy. Saved ten dollars with amazon prime buying it online as opposed to buying it in the store.

5.0 out of 5 stars For All Levels, October 15, 2010
This review is from: PHOTO:BOX (Hardcover)
As an intermediate level photographer, I believe the best way to improve one's craft is to go out and shoot. The second best way is to study and learn from the world's greatest photographers
and this wonderful collection provides just that opportunity. I was very impressed with the commentary provided for each photograph - that alone was worth the price of admission. The 250 photographs
are full page, many in color and a great and varied representation of the work of some of the most renowned photographers of all time. The writing as well as the photography captivates me to the point that
I've chosen to study one photograph and it's accompanying dialogue each day until I've completed the tome and then I'll most likely start over again, because by then I most likely will see something I
previously missed. And isn't that what photography is all about?

To have included Jack Kerouac's tribute to Robert Frank is an example of the kind of surprises that await you: "Robert Frank, Swiss, unobtrusive, nice, with that little camera that he raises and snaps with one hand he sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world. To Robert Frank I now give this message: You got eyes." That juxtaposed alongside Frank's "Parade, Hoboken, New Jersey", wow! Thank you, Roberto Koch
and contributors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Inspiration Resource, January 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PHOTO:BOX (Hardcover)
I saw a fellow photography student looking at this book and after looking through it I knew I had to have my own copy. Cleverly categorized by subject matter (war, portraits, nudes, etc.) it gives a single work for an artist and a short page of text speaking about the artist and the work. It's a great resource for any photographer. It includes artists from early photography years all the way to current artists. Great variety and informative text. I would definitely recommend it.
