Product Description

Unlike the stand-alone programmer K8076, this programmer also acts as an advanced experimenters board for PIC microcontrollers. Separate 8, 14, 18, and 28 pin sockets accommodate a wide variety of controllers. This eliminates the need for patching a universal ZIF socket. In addition, programming switches and LED status and feedback indicators to help you with your programming. Once programmed, no need to move the PIC to another board, making the K8048 a great teaching tool for PIC programmming. Also includes a standard PIC 16F627 PIC to experiment with, over and over again! Standard programming functions are similar to the K8076. Code can be created in any ASCII word processor (i.e. notepad) or using Microchip's MPLAB development package (available at www.microchip.com). After writing the code and compiling, your code can be written directly to the microcontroller! The ICSP function allows you to reprogram controllers still in-use/powered by another board by simply connecting the chip to the ICSP bus on the programmer! All the software you need to get started is included, and with a basic knowledge of ASM and this kit the possibilities are endless! Check out the screen shot of the included software. Compatible with Win95/98/ME/NT/2K/and XP. If you are looking for a quick PIC microcontroller programmer only, without the advanced experimenter features, check out the K8076. Note: this product requires a standard RS232 serial connection, and is NOT compatible with USB to RS232 serial adaptors or converters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, nice board if it supports your serial port., February 20, 2009

This is actually a Velleman board. It worked great with my Dell D610, but would not work with my Dell D600. I didn't try it on a desktop, it would probably have worked fine there as well. Also, the Amazon picture is the wrong part, though the customer supplied picture is correct (thanks!).

It has good software and good support for LOTS of different PIC chips, and is straightforward to use. Easy to build and well documented, though the toggle switch needs a little breaking in.

Good board for initial learning, and continues to work fine when you just use it as a programmer. It does not include the C compilers, or MPLab, but those are easy enough to get and install.

I'd recommend it if you are learning, so long as the price stays low, though with the caveat that it won't work with all serial ports, and won't work with any USB to Serial adapters. If you know what you are doing and just want a dedicated programmer, there are probably other better choices out there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent Card if you have the right Serial connection., December 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PIC Programmer & Experimenter Kit (Toy)
So I'm going to keep this short, since my review is mainly based off the fact that this card cannot use a Serial to USB adapter. I didn't see the small comment made by the company that it doesn't allow the the conversion to take place, making it extremely difficult to use on a laptop or most modern computers without buying a Serial PCI card. Of course it's my fault that I didn't read everything on the product page before the purchase, but I wanted to warn others so they don't make the same mistake I did.
