Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The PIRIT Water Line is for anyone who needs to use a hose in below-freezing temperatures. Depending on need, leave it plugged in 24-7 or simply plug it in only when in use. The thermostatically controlled Water Line is set to activate the heating element if the ambient temperature outside the hose is +/- 45 degrees F. and to turn off the heating element of the ambient temperature reaches +/- 57 degrees F. If left plugged in, it will never allow water to freeze inside. If left unplugged with water inside, the water will freeze. Just plug it in before use, give it a few minutes (depending on how cold it is outside) to thaw and you'll have running water again. The PIRIT Water Line is constructed with a food grade PVC accepted by the FDA for potable water. The grounded cord is approximately 6 feet in length. Certified to UL and CSA safety standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars From: A Winter-Camper: Short Version: WOW! Buy it. Worth the $$., December 31, 2010
This review is from: PIRIT PWL-02-50 Water Line 50-Foot x 5/8-Inch Heated Water Hose (Lawn & Patio)

Purchase Options:
I shopped for heated hose options on the Internet. I was surprised to only find two options. The one is of course Pirit and the other is a super-high-quality custom built hose, but so expensive it was not ever a purchase option.

Environment:
I will be using my RV at destination ski resorts in the future. I am currently attending a university, living in Eastern Washington at the base of the Cascade Mountains in a 27' fifth wheel. I have used the hose for two winters. It is parked 45' away from any structures. Winter temperatures have ranged from 32 to -20 F (both hard winters, so much for global warming). The hose works flawlessly. This winter the extension cord powering the hose got bumped. I noticed the snow starting to cover the hose, alerting me I had lost power. The hose had started to freeze. Per the directions, I simply plugged the hose back in and it continues to work flawlessly.

Craftsmanship:
The hose is sturdy, best quality of garden hose I have ever seen, large diameter, high quality materials through-out, good looking with excellent fittings and assembly. It detects temperatures at both ends, in case one end is inside a protected environment.

Durability:
Having used this hose for two years, I would never buy the competitors hose. I could buy six, 50' Pirit hoses compared to the one of the competitors, and have the benefit of a new hose every so often. I roll it in larger 4' loops. From a structural standpoint, if taken care of, this hose should last 10-20 years. I would assume from an electrical standpoint the life expectancy to be shorter. I have no idea how long that would be, but obvious handling and care of the hose will play a huge role. I would be satisfied to get 6-10 years of service out of this hose, but that's just me. Keep in mind, I have the hose plugged in the entire winter, and the hose is in use throughout the rest of the year for many of those months.

Negatives:
The only negative I could possibly come up with is taste. This is no different from any other potable RV hose. The hose is an approved potable delivery system. Once I run the water out of the length of the hose the taste improves until tasting fresh. I have found no other negatives for this product. Reference other reviewers comments on having to disconnect after every use; perhaps a better way to state that is that any connection at the hose fitting or beyond will need to be insulated. This to me is only common sense and if that faucet had not been insulated it would be frozen in the first place. In short anything beyond the Pirit hose connections need to be insulated or wrapped. Note: where the Pirit hose connects to my RV I wrap with half-inch thick and 3 inches long slit-foam insulation and have had no problems

Further Information:
I had a regular potable RV hose connected to the heated hose with only the fittings exposed to the weather, hanging outside of the door (door notch). I figured the thermodynamics of the water would keep the water in the fittings from freezing. (at 10 degrees F). As per the Pirit instructions / information, the fittings did freeze (but, did not break). When all else fails believe the manual! LOL
I cannot imagine it ever being cold enough to freeze this hose when plugged in. For wherever it is, I do not want to be for long. It is rated for -40 F. My RV is rated for -40F (I do not want to have to pay the propane bill at that temperature) LOL.
Contraindicated by Pirit, I bought 4' links of slit-foam insulation wraps at $1.00 apiece at Lowe's hardware for the hose. This is only to stop sun and weather damage as the hose is used all year long and exposed to 100+ degree temperatures. However, I have had no negative issues using the insulation. Personally, I think it is a great way to prolong and protect the hose.

Support:
Prior to buying, I asked Pirit several questions via e-mail. I got an immediate response and very personalized and detailed information. The e-mail response to me was concise and honest and very reassuring.

Post blah blah blah:
If you haven't gotten the message that I think this is an outstanding product and very reasonably priced, than I have failed.

JB

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, December 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PIRIT PWL-02-50 Water Line 50-Foot x 5/8-Inch Heated Water Hose (Lawn & Patio)
Took a chance with this not knowing how well it worked. Turned out to be very well made and performs as advertised. Spendy, but better priced than at the farm and ranch supply. No more hauling buckets of water to the animal trough during these Montana winters. I made a wood protector for the section that vehicles drive over. Needs to be handled a little more carefully than a standard hose.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hose must be disconnected from faucet after every use., December 19, 2009
This review is from: PIRIT PWL-02-50 Water Line 50-Foot x 5/8-Inch Heated Water Hose (Lawn & Patio)
The hose has to be disconnected from the faucet after every use. This is not mentioned in the description. The hose connector does not heat, and if left on the faucet when not in use, the faucet will freeze. If you don't mind screwing and unscrewing the connector in cold temps after every use, this is a good product for you. A "quick disconnect" adaptor from Home Depot might be make this product more user friendly.
