I have to admit that I was somewhat skeptical when I first heard about this product. I think Bang & Olufsen has developed a reputation for delivering high style, high price but so-so audio performance in the past 10 years. I've owned some B&O products in the past have been happy--but not blown away--with them. However, when I read the reviews of the Beolit 12, I decided to take the plunge and purchase it. We have just moved into a new home and I was looking for something that would be truly portable in the hopes that it would stave off the purchase of several sets of new speakers on our deck, in our spa room, in our living room, etc. In comparison to what THAT investment would be, the $799 I paid for the Beolit 12 actually made it a relative value.

I've probably listened to it for around 10-12 hours so far and I am really, really impressed with everything about the Beolit 12. Setup was truly a breeze using the Beolit Setup app on my iPhone. I had no issues getting it hooked up to my home and office wifi networks. The highs are crisp and authentic-sounding (despite the fact that I think the drivers themselves are still breaking in). The bass is astonishing given the size of the driver and the power of the 120 watt Class D amp is guaranteed to give me more than enough volume for any situation I'd want to use it in. The battery life is pretty incredible and this dimension makes it perfect for how I envisioned using this speaker. While I love the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air (and I hope to buy one in the future), the portability of the Beolit 12 more than compensates for some of the imaging compromises brought about by such a small package.

Oh, and one other thing: the design of the Beolit 12 is perfect for its intended use.

The sound is absolutely amazing!

But the wifi and battery are terrible.

Even though my house is well covered with WiFi, the Beolit reports "poor signal" no matter where I place it. While using AirPlay, the Beolit is the only of my multiple AirPlay speakers to have drop outs - near continuous drop out. Usually on a drop out the Beolit will not recover. Instead, I have to power cycle the unit.

About 6 months after I purchased this the battery wouldn't hold a charger any more, with a red blinking light on the side.

When I contacted B&O support they only told me "Take it back to the store you bought it from." So I went back to the Apple store and they said "Sorry, B&O has to provide support for this." So I contacted B&O again and they said "Your battery probably needs to be replaced and we have a WiFi bug that won't allow it to work if you have multiple access points - your only option is to hard wire it or shut off all but one access point." Wow! Admitting a bug but refusing to fix it. How can they sell an $800 piece of audio gear with a known defect in its primary feature?

Now I'm wishing I had purchased the B&W A5 instead - sure, no battery but at least I wouldn't have drop outs.

I just returned from vacation with an unplanned "self gift". After hearing the Beolit 12 for the first time in a B&O retail store, I was completely sold and bought one on the spot. Just a few comments on this piece of equipment. It is a self contained amplifier/speaker combination that utilizes Apple's Air Play tech. After a simple 5 minute link between the unit and one of your home computers, the unit is able to play songs wirelessly from your ipod, ipad or any computer using itunes. The sound produced by the Biolit 12 is simply amazing. Deep rich bass accompanied by clear treble and mid-range sounds make all music types sound like your are sitting in front of the artist live.

Yes it is a little pricey, but, when you consider the sound quality, portability and ease of use, the purchase price is worth it. I find myself moving it from room to room and can't wait to listen to it out on my deck this summer. In a word, this product is outstanding!

Do I like the audio quality of the Beolit 12 - YES, but that is where my happiness with this device ends. While I never had an issue with AirPlay upon first purchasing the Beolit 12, after the company provided the 1st software update the device began dropping constantly - an issue that continues to plague my listening to such an extent I typically listen with the iPhone plugged into the Beolit 12.

I have and have always had the latest AirPort Extreme and keep the software updated, and have never had a single issue with any of the other AirPlay devices on my network. Here are some of the many things I have experienced with this device:

- Inconsistent connection strength. Mind you the Beolit 12 sits all of 20 ft from my AirPort Extreme (on the opposite wall in an open room), yet the signal strength of the Beolit will range from excellent to poor. There is no rhyme or reason why the difference, but B&O has acknowledged that its software is "buggy", which leads me to the next item.

- B&O has done a poor job providing updates for the product. The most recent update is from 2012. So I am trying to understand how a company that supposedly prides itself on quality, can acknowledge that the current release of its software has issues yet not provide an update for more than 2 years. The "current" software is version 1.02.12 with a March 26, 2012 release date. To me the lack of software updates demonstrated B&O's [lack of] commitment to quality, reputation and this product. Mind you, I have owned and currently own other B&O products, and more and more I believe the company's view is to develop products that are purely visually pleasing but are technologically inferior. This is not to say B&O speaker products do not sound fine, but hifi they are not.
