What I did not realize is that it comes in 323 pieces that need to be put together.

Yes this product, like most Playmobil sets, comes in hundreds of pieces and the burden of construction is on the parent(s); however, once this thing is put together it is non-stop fun and entertainment for generations to come. If parents are looking for an out of the box toy that comes pre-built, and are willing to trade intricate design/details, then this is not the toy for you.

Pros:
+) Classic quality brand, with a great/proven reputation.
+) Design is very intricate, detailed, and the pieces are durable. We had an incident whereas one of our kids accidentally fell on the set, and it separated into about 10 pieces. We thought for sure we were going to have to deal with some broken pieces, but everything was still intact and we were able to reconstruct successfully (after getting the instructions back out).
+) We plan on keeping this set for generations to come, and so we see this is a long term investment as well.
+) Great resale value, if that is what you want to do, just ask any toy reseller.
+) Both our son and daughter love this set and have consistently played with it daily since we got it. Great for role playing and imagination generation.

Cons:
-) Pricey. Playmobil limits the distribution, and seems to control the market price.
-) Significant time (~1.5 hours) and effort (will test your construction skills) is required to build the set out of the box. Keep the instructions, as they will come in handy. If you want to avoid having to build this toy under pressure (kid(s) anxiously trying to wait and wanting to "help"), you can always put it together beforehand.

Bottom line: educate yourself as to what you are getting, and decide what the priorities are for you.

I've had my eye on this station since my 3-year old son (now almost 4) received his first playmobil fire truck 8 months ago. I was able to build the set up to 3 or 4 vehicles and a selection of firemen and equipment. The only thing missing was the fire station. I watched and waited for a good buying opportunity and through a 30% coupon was able to get it for around $50 on another site.

It does take a few hours to fully put together, and yes the parts are distributed in bags in somewhat irrelevant groupings. I often had to search around for the right parts for a few minutes. My son was excited but happy to play with the individual pieces while I put it together. There were 2 cases where I had to backtrack on assembly because the picture wasn't quite specific enough, but its easy to pop the pieces apart and edit. The best-case assembler should be patient, a fairly logical thinker, and used to using picture-based instructions. The main parts are individually very well-made, and fittings are generally good between them. Overall putting it together was kind of fun, the assembly does not affect my rating.

As a whole assembled unit, I was disappointed in the connection between the fire tower and main station, its just not enough connecting surface there, and therefore a bit flimsy. I wish they added an inter-connecting floor piece between the two. This toy is best left in one place rather than moved around a lot. Also, I was disappointed that none of the furniture, including the main control desk which pretty much can only be in one place anyways, doesn't attach to the floor. Rather its all loose sitting and therefore easily knocked around when playing with the little firemen and equipment inside, even for little hands.

We gave this to our 4 year old boy for Christmas and it has instantly replaced all other toys in the house for favorite play (we also got the Playmobil Ladder Unit fire truck, which has also been a huge hit). It reminds me of the original Death Star toy from the 1970s: lots of fun details and plenty of opportunity to create narrative.

YES it's a pain in the rear to assemble. It took my husband and me over an hour to put it together. YES you might rhetorically ask why Playmobil decided to give 4 floor pieces that have to be snapped together, rather than just one floor piece? And couldn't they have grouped the baggies of plastic pieces more logically? It's OK: take your time, lay everything out, and use the little tool they give you for snapping in the connector pieces.

Once it's assembled, it has all the quality, sturdy construction and fun details Playmobil is known for.

If your child enjoys concentrated imaginary play, and loves fire trucks, I strongly recommend this set.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my nephew. He loves fireman Sam and I was sure he would love it. What I did not realize is that it comes in 323 pieces that need to be put together. After an hour of assembly and it still not together, I packed it up and sent it back. Not worth the money or time.
