Product Description

The Lion Knights' Castle, with its action-packed traps and functions, is sure to entertain for hours. Due to its asymmetrical shape, the castle provides plenty of space for playing. The castle is protected by double gates with a portcullis and falling rocks. It also includes a breakout wall, drop-down ladder, and a secret lift to bring up the king's treasure when the castle is under threat. The set includes six figures, two horses, functional cannons, and many other accessories. Dimensions: 28.3 x 31.5 x 22.4 inches (L x W x H). Recommended for ages four to ten. Playmobil, Germany's largest toy manufacturer, is headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany and has been producing and distributing toys for more than 36 years. The miniature worlds of Playmobil encourage children to explore and learn while having fun. Children's imaginations are transported to medieval times with the Playmobil castle, to the adventurous seas with Playmobil pirates, and many other themed playworlds. The figures can bend, sit, stand, and turn their heads to make realistic role play possible.

My family is a long time fan of Playmobil castles - we have 2 castles and lots of add-ons. When this came out around September, I just had to go check it out. I called around to find a neighborhood toy store that had it set up for play and finally found one, quite far away.

I am glad to say that this new Playmobil castle did not disappoint. It is huge at over 2 ft x 2.5 ft, i.e., it is gigantic compared to twice of Lego castle 7946. It features walls with yellow and red connectors or pegs like the older castles so they are compatible. I think my boys will be excited to be able to add portcullis (with a trap to drop stone on the enemy), fold-away stairs, treasure hoist plus all the countless little pieces (unfortunately the store either lost most of the small pieces or was wise to not display those). I expect lots of playability like the other Playmobil castle products.

At $180, it is really expensive. Kids usually play with castles and sleep in castles from 3-10 years. So if you do the math, it comes to $30 per year. Playmobil castles not as configurable as Lego but much sturdier and bigger (which means easier and more fun for younger kids). If you and the grandparents are getting together to buy the one castle toy, make it this one. Forget Fisher Price, Little People stuff, etc, even forget Lego. Make the investment. Only, keep the small pieces until your child is over 5. I am watching the price and waiting for a sale. This was out this September, so I probably won't find it in any garage sales soon.

I give it big props for coolness factor... trap doors, an elevator, stairs you can hoist up and down... rooms big enough to furnish with a bed and dresser...

However, they aren't compatible with the old castles, you can't combine them. Also, with the old ones, you could take them apart and put them back together in a variety of ways, promoting architectural creativity. You could buy farmhouses and bakeries and add them to your castle. The Lion Castle can only be built one ways, the parts are too specific.

Also, the figures used to be neutral enough that if you changed the hats and accessories around the person could be something else, like a cowboy or modern man. This is no longer the case, the armor is molded on so you can't change your people around anymore.

Also, lately Playmobil is getting too gender-specific. This castle comes with 4 men and 1 Queen. The older castles could be played with by both girls and boys, you could buy girly sets like Princesses fairies and furniture or more boyish sets like knights, or you could buy neutral sets like wizards and witches and dwarves. Now they have a separate pink castle for girls. This is too bad because it doesn't promote girls and boys playing together anymore, and that was one of the nicest things about Playmobil.

The current castle is too specific to war play as opposed to general medieval life play. I remedied this by buying female figures on ebay to populate the castle for my daughter, and by buying some farm animals and furniture sets.

So I don't regret blowing my gift card on it, but if you don't have a gift card and are going to spend actual money at any place you want, go to Ebay and get the old school castles.

Having said that we all love it and are having a good time.

We started with playmobile figures because they were cheap. After a while my son had created a "castle" out of Lego for his Playmobile medieval guys to play in. He played with it so much that I caved in and bought the big castle. He plays with it constantly. It's got trap doors, secret passages, treasure, portcullis everything. Takes an hour to put together. May need to be glued here and there depending on how boisterous your child is. A ton of fun. Not cheap but hey. They're only young once.

I've had my eye on this castle for a while, but was waiting until my son was old enough before we purchased it. At 4, he's still on the young end for it, but I think this is a toy he will be able to play with at different levels for several years.

The castle does take some time to assemble. It took my husband and I about two-and-a-half hours to finish completely putting it together. Plan ahead if this will be a Christmas or birthday gift and your child will want to play with it right out of the box.

The castle is a nice size and children can easily play from any side of the castle. We had three children easily playing around it. We also had an 18 month old attempting to sit in the middle of it, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend that unless you're playing "Giant who destroys the castle." Thankfully it snaps back together pretty easily. I put up some of the smaller pieces until the baby is older and I'm less concerned about her choking or swallowing them.

There are tons of great features to this castle. My son really likes the breakthrough walls and the elevator. And what's not to like about dropping rocks on enemy invaders? The only thing I didn't like is that the cannon is very difficult to fire. It takes a good deal of pressure and my son can't do it without help. The mechanism on the cannon that came with the Playmobil Knights Take Along Tower is much easier to operate. I wish the one with this castle had a similar design.

It is expensive, but I think it's going to prove to be worth the investment. I'd recommend it if you have a little boy interested in castles and imaginative play.
