Book Description

THEIR FIRST MISTAKE was ever telling the world about the wonders they had found.

They should have kept it all a secret. If they’d kept it a secret, fewer people would have died. When archaeologists uncover the largest ancient safe in the world, the wrong kinds of people will show up: criminals, mercenaries, treasure hunters.

THEIR SECOND MISTAKE was opening it.

Why would an ancient culture devote three generations to build a giant stone safe? Why would they bury it so the jungle could hide it from the world? Why ritually sacrifice one hundred thousand people to ensure its secrecy?

THEIR LAST MISTAKE proved the biggest.

This last mistake hurt the most. Their last mistake was to assume that nothing had been left behind to keep guard….

Special note: PLAZA has an active table of contents, is approximately 90,000 words, and displays seamlessly with Kindles and all other eBook reading devices.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book! March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Archaeology runs right through the novel and is pivotal to the very original plot (not just tacked on for atmosphere). Overall it reads like a Dan Brown plot, carried along by Matthew Reilly-style action. If you enjoy reading those authors, then I'd highly recommend Plaza.

Different people will enjoy different parts, but for me (without giving away any spoilers) the best part is when the secrets of the Plaza are revealed and mayhem breaks lose. This is the second novel I've read by Shane Brown, and I'm looking forward to his next.

Bonus points for setting a good price point! I expected his second novel to be more expensive, but (at the time of writing) this book is the same price as FAST.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, surprising and fast paced March 25, 2012

This is the second novel I've read from Shane Brown and I was not disappointed. The author's use of nature and science helps to suspend disbelief while the action rolls on. Once again strong characterisation helps to sustain engagement with the story and the constant action keeps you reading. I was hoping for more of the characters from FAST but the new team created here is well realised and perfect for the story. Shane Brown seems particularly good at keeping the behaviour of his characters believable, without resorting to stereotypes. Overall an excellent second effort, I'm looking forward to more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun book with misleading book description June 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The book description says the archaeological crew made three mistakes: They should have kept the site a secret, they shouldn't have opened the structure and they should have somehow realized that something had been left behind to keep guard.

Nonsense. The crew has already been on this dig for more than 2 years with no problems. And it's the standard goal of archeologists to open long-lost structures. And no monsters are keeping guard. (Supposedly, the creatures come to this place once a year.)

But this year, they've stayed a day too long. On the final day of the seasonal dig, two separate groups of antiquities looters make their moves just as the creatures arrive to feed or mate or whatever (it's never really revealed). All the action takes place in just 24 hours, making it almost like a caper narrative.

I liked this fast, fun read even though there were a couple of red herrings and answers to a couple crucial questions were left hanging. For instance, we never know which culture built the Plaza and the "secret society" of archeologists is breathlessly mentioned then dropped. One red herring is Rourke saying," The danger wasn't from the outside. These people were defending themselves from something that was already there," which is entirely false. Another red herring is Abigail Astrenzi's oh-so-important pollen analysis: The results are never revealed, even to the chief archeologist, and it basically makes no difference to the plot.

Be aware, however, that the preparation of this manuscript was less than professional. That is, hyphens are used for dashes and single quote marks are used for double quote marks throughout.

Where to begin? Since I'm the 29th to review plaza here, it makes it a bit more difficult. I usually title a review with a sentence from the story as I did here. Chosen while I'm reading the book and then book marked. This is the first story where I completely forgot to book mark anything at all. Fortunately events are memorable, making it easy to go back and find something relevant. It is very easy to be caught up in this story the action is wonderful and characters engaging . It definitely worth reading, also a great book to take a break from another genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shane Brown is 2 for 2 in the Action~Thriller Dept! April 15, 2012
By Coach D
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow! I just read my 2nd book by Shane Brown and I loved it! Shane Brown is 2 for 2 in the action-thriller department as far as I am concerned. I loved FAST, and I loved Plaza just as much. The action for FAST was fantastic and it fit that type of book. FAST was a military action thriller all the way.......While Plaza is an exciting combination of archaeology and all-out action. And of course, once again, Shane tossed in some strange monsters/creatures and the story took place in an isolated location. A different kind of action then what was featured in FAST. PLAZA is more along the lines of Amazonia, with maybe a tad more action. I loved Amazonia as well, and consider it one of my favorite James Rollins books. I think FAST will be favorably compared to books like Matthew Reilly's Ice Station, while PLAZA will be compared to Amazonia and another Reilly thriller: Temple.

I normally do not read two books by the same author so close together as I did FAST and PLAZA, but I could not wait once I found out Shane Brown had a 2nd book avaiable. And what a good deal on his prices, both books selling for only $2.99 and I think they are available on Amazon Prime to borrow for free (one book per month).

Now I must pay the price for reading both of his books so close together.......I have to wait UNTIL his next thriller comes out (FAST II?).

4.0 out of 5 stars Grab it now April 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The beginning felt a little like someone took scissors to parts of the story but it evened out well by the first third. Well-written, a few homonym problems (damn for dam comes to mind), but nothing that took me out of the story.

And what a story... The archaeology angle was great and sounded completely believable to me. I ripped through this book pretty much in one sitting and am glad I did. I hope that the author feels there's enough words left in the world he's created here to pick up a sequel or even to jaunt out in a new direction to explore some of what he touched on but didn't go into detail.

The story is interesting and fast-paced. I felt the hero of the story is kind of dumb or of the villains are extremely smart, I’m not sure which thought is correct. Read more

More About the Author

Hi there!

If you haven't landed on this page by accident, then you're one of those curious people, like me, who likes to know a bit more about the authors we read. My life is much less exciting than my writing (thank goodness, because I put my characters through hell!)

I am the lucky father of three young children, and live in Brisbane, Australia. I attended James Cook University from 1991 to 1998, graduating with a Bachelor of Biological Science with duel majors in Zoology and Archaeology, a First Class Honors Degree in Underwater Archaeology, and a Masters Degree in Environmental Management. I draw on knowledge from all of these disciplines in my books, but am still trying to learn something new every day.

To date, I have completed three novels, titled FAST (a military thriller), PLAZA (an archaeological thriller), and MELT. FAST and PLAZA are both the first books in a set of trilogies. MELT is a stand alone psychological thriller. My final title, AFTER, is a collection of short stories.

Right now I am working on the sequel to FAST, and very much enjoying my role in assisting with the development of a feature film based on one of my short stories.

I love interacting with readers, and I respond to everyone who either contacts me directly or leaves a review for one of my books.

I want to talk to YOU! So try out one of my titles (they're only $2.99) or download one when they are free. I'm happy either way, as long as my work is being read and enjoyed.

Hope to see you around this incredible place called Amazon soon!
