3.0 out of 5 stars Needed resources - Filled with errors
This examp prep is key to passing the PMP exam. It covers topics that are tested but not in PMBOK. But, the text and sample questions CD are filled with errors. Combine these errors with PMI's goofy subjective questions for some fun stress.

Good luck passing the PMP!

5.0 out of 5 stars PMP Exam Prep - Seminal guide to exam success, June 12, 2002

I recently passed my PMP exam with this book and related materials as the ONLY exam preparation tools I used. My 20+ years of PM experience would not have been sufficient to score nearly as well because of the fairly narrow interpretations of many terms and concepts that are unique to the PMI context.
I read a variety of texts and web-based resources during my eight months of preparation and study, but relied almost exclusively on Rita's Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep tools to provide "ground truth" when I encountered conflicting methods or subtle differences in methodology promoted by individual experts in the field.
Of greatest value were tips on the exam itself, suggestions for resolving what appear at first glance to be multiple correct answers, and the emphasis on essential relationships and formulas.
The practice exams were worth every penny of the cost of your entire package. By taking them repeatedly for several weeks, I developed a rhythm of responding to easier questions and deferring successively more difficult questions in a way that carried over to the actual exam and made that 4 hours seem comfortably familiar. Identifying the subject matter of more commonly missed questions also helped focus my final study sessions on specific topics or vernacular that could have been problematic.
This is a well-designed package of materials that Rita supports quite well and obviously works hard to keep current. I applaud Rita's contribution to the PM profession.

5.0 out of 5 stars Efficient and effective PMP preparation tool, May 28, 2002
This review is from: PMP Exam Prep (Paperback)
This 244 book fills in the gaps in the PMBOK 2000, and also provides complete coverage of professional responsibility topics and requirements. It's designed as a 120 hour course of instruction, and is focused on the important knowledge factors that you'll encounter on the PMP exam.

It provides clear and complete explanations of the PMBOK 2000 core concepts without the fuzziness or verbosity that characterizes the PMBOK. It also contains exercises and practice exams to help you prepare, and gives tips on what to study, including material that will be on the exam that is not covered in the PMBOK.

What I like about this guide is the lack of fluff, the focus on learning the exam and the preparatory advice that is given.

5.0 out of 5 stars PMP Exam Prep reference book, June 12, 2002

Hello Rita, just wanted to drop you a line and inform you that I PASSED the PMP exam on Saturday! Without the assistance of your reference material, PMP Exam Prep, Hot Topics and Situational Questions, I don't think that I would have passed. You see, I'm currently unemployed and I plan on using the PMP designation to give me an edge over other individuals when looking for employment. I could not afford to go to any of your classes, and I did not have anyone else to study with but I did obtain your reference materials. I purchased other reference material, for example, another PMP EXAM Practice Test and Study Guide, but found your reference material to be the best. Reading the other books was time consuming and frankly, quite boring...Your materials were very easy to follow and nicely summarized.

I especially liked the variation that you used. Summary formats, memory games, chapter exercises and practice tests. It was a very good way to highlight the main topics in PMBOK.

Thank you once again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favor and Get This Book!, September 24, 2002

If you are going to take the PMP exam, forget the PMBOK. Everything you need to know is in Rita's book, and it's much easier to study. She skips all the extraneous stuff and tells you what you need to know to pass the exam.

Just studying may not be enough for some people, especially if test taking is not your thing. I also purchased Rita's CD full of exam questions. It's a little pricey, but well worth it. The questions on the were an accurate representation of those on the exam. I ended up easily passing with a 178, and would not have scored as high if I didn't have the exam CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic PMP Exam Study Guide, January 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: PMP Exam Prep (Paperback)
I passed the PMP exam with this book, doing the exercises, and taking the practice questions. It is well-written, an easy read, and funny! It includes topics that are on the exam that are not included in the PMBOK 2000. Do NOT waste your time or money taking a prep class. Buy this book, use the PMBOK as it's reference, and make sure that you take the practice questions 3 times and you are scoring at least 90%. Do NOT hesitate. Click as fast as you can and get this book in your hands right now.

Rita knows PMP better than anybody else. There is no tangling of ideas between jargons. Text is simple/lucid and drives home the point. With just barely 28 hours of effort I could clear the exam after reading her materials.
I have known people who have studied other materials for more than 6 months and have not felt confident.
If there is one book I will advise anybody to buy, it is this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars PMP exam prep....Got to have it!!!, June 12, 2002
This review is from: PMP Exam Prep (Paperback)
If you are determined to obtain your PMP, you would do yourself a favor by getting this book. I got the PMBOK thinking I would learn all I needed from it HAH!. Rita's book puts the entire process into focus and tells you what to memorize and what not to concern yourself with. I can not say enough good things about her efforts in making an impossible test, passable.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book helped me clear the PMP Exam, June 24, 2003

This book complements the PMBOK and is good reference for passing the PMP Exam. The practice questions at the end of each topic definitely reinforce the understanding.

This book can certainly do with some improvements. I am not too thrilled with the way the material has been laid out on this book. A thorough proof reading will definitely make it better. I do not know how the 4th edition has shaped up.

Overall, this book is good and it helped me clear the exam with a high percentage.

4.0 out of 5 stars WHLACA, September 1, 2002

From my experience, knowing the PMBOK "inside-out" was essential to passing the PMP certification exam, but the PMBOK alone probably would not have been sufficient. I found Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep book to be very helpful, and I recommend it. (If it wasn't for the fact that there were several obvious but not critical typos throughout the book, it would receive the rating of "five stars" instead of the four given here.) However, I suggest expanding your study beyond both of those reference materials in order to best broaden your knowledge of the subject matter and prepare for the exam.
