This book truly delivers what the title says. The reading is smooth and encouraging. It takes you through in a thoughtful and joyful journey to explore the PMS web of possible causes. Obviously, Ms. Hahn has "been there" as her words really hit home for me. I knew that this wasn't just another research project turned into a book. She truly knows how to explain the issues and uses a wonderful questionaire that allowed me to come to my own conclusions. This book gave me hope and encouragement AND it WORKED! I recommend it to all my friends. You won't be lost or disappointed with this book! It surely saved me!

My mother in law gave me this book as a present. What a good present! I understand more every time I read it. As I gradually apply the book to my life, my health has definately improved. Although the book has a solid scientific basis, it is clearly written and upbeat. It gave me useful tools and information and encouraged me to more fully take charge of my own health. While many women endure PMS, it is not normal and does not have to be part of your life.

This book focuses more on speculation than on fact. The author - understandably - is trying to track down the causes of her own PMS, but the result is high on speculation and low on science (the bibliography at the end of the book references some frighteningly old books and papers). I found her approach confusing, for instance, she names insomnia as a cause of PMS, not as a symptom.
Since it was published in 1995, a significant amount of the information it contains has been entirely disproven, for instance, the chapter on candida. If you choose to read this book, I suggest you supplement it with more current information, especially before modifying your diet. There is probably some useful information in this book, but it's mixed in with too many unproven and outdated ideas. Look for something more recent.

GET FROM LIBRARY!,
This review is from: PMS: Solving the Puzzle - Sixteen Causes of Premenstrual Syndrome and What to Do About It (Paperback)
This book was written in 1995. That being said, the author was VERY MUCH ahead of her time. The book is her research intertwined with her own journey to wellness. It is very simplistic. For that reason I recommend borrowing it from your library. It has several charts to track diet/moods which can easily be photocopied if you are interested. *** I am a semi-vegetarian who exercises regularly and avoids caffeine and processed foods. It is enfuriating to read treatises on how those are the sole triggers of PMS. I have had horrible symptoms since age 12 despite my research and efforts to be health-conscious. All the women in my family also have severe PMS. I have done a lot of research on the subject, and Hahn is the first I've found to link THYROID/ADRENAL issues to PMS. And again, this was in the early nineties!! Kudos to a woman whose curiosity and determination led her to greater health! She touches on all of the popular dietary triggers I've mentioned above. In addition, she writes about thyroid issues, sleep cycles, candida, phototherapy, and natural progesterone supplementation. In 2011, there is a greater knowledge base regarding these topics. Hence why I would recommend borrowing this book from a local library. References she uses in the book can be a starting point for further online research.

I received this book as a present from my mother. She knew I suffered from PMS severly (and I stress severly). I could not move off the couch for 2 days due to mygrain headaches, lower back pain and cramps. I read the book, started following what it prescribed and with in days I started feeling better, within 2 menstraul cycles I was able to function even on the first day! My acne cleared up and I have lost 10 pounds!!! I love this book and so does my family, considering now I can spend quality time with them. Thank you Linaya Hahn, for saving my life and giving me new meaning to move forward.
