This review is from: PNY GeForce GT 220 1024 MB PCI-Express 2.0 DVI with HDMI and VGA Graphics Card VCGGT2201XEB (Personal Computers)
I bought this for a stock HP desktop that I bought refurbished that has on-board (built in) graphics, which was the main negative about it that I wanted to change. It also has a quad core CPU and 8GB of RAM...cheap RAM, but 8GB nonetheless. The power supply is only 350 watts. Keep in mind that overall it is a pretty wimpy system, particularly compared to a gaming system I recently built myself, but I mainly bought it for my kids to use for homework and to play some of their games off of.
It had one open PCI-E slot, into which I dropped this card. The card requires no power hook-up, but instead draws its power from the motherboard. My computer recognized it right away (Vista 64-bit Home Edition) and switched over automatically from its on-board graphics to this card. (I had to restart it once for it to find it) If this does not happen for your particular machine, the instructions tell you how to re-configure the BIOS to rectify the situation. Right now I only have it hooked up to the VGA port due to the lack of a cable. It also has a DVI port, which I will soon use, and an HDMI port. It comes with software for drivers (it installs two if you so desire, one for graphics and one for 3-D gaming) and also a VGA to DVI converter. It also comes with low-profile mounting brackets if required. The instructions are very straight-forward if you need them, plus they supply the web address for a support website and a number to call 24/7 should you need assistance (I've tried neither). Now that the card has been installed on my refurbished desktop, all activities on my screen are noticeably faster. So, for the money and for what I needed, I'm very pleased. This is one of the few relatively low-cost cards I found that had 1GB of memory and also had an HDMI port to boot. At present my monitor only has a DVI and a VGA port for hookup, but I like having the HDMI option in case I upgrade the monitor later. In summary, I've found this card to be a good value for what you get and I recommend it.

So far seems to operate as advertised. Installed in a Dell Studio 540 under Windows 7. I did have to bend the plate on the back of computer, slightly, to accomidate the use of the HDMI plug. The computer seems a lot faster by not using the intergrated motherboard graphics. Went from 3.0 to 5.1 under windows user expierance index. I can't speak for gaming but HD video is GREAT! No power supply issues.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit with my 46" HDTV, and this card works great at speeding up the performance of my computer at very high resolutions. Windows runs faster than before, and frees up processor usage for the many tasks I run simultaneously. This card probably isn't the best for gamers, but for someone on a budget that is upgrading from onboard graphics, this is a great alternative!

BEWARE IF USING HDMI PORT,

Installed on XP machine and video and audio worked fine through HDMI cable. Unfortunately I couldn't use it on the HP computer I bought it for because the HDMI port is too close to the top edge of the card...a very poor design flaw for what could have been a great GT 220 budget card. I'm also using the thinnest HDMI cable connector out there but still no way to plug cable in. I had another HP which I installed this card in but I had to indent case to get the cable into the port. Probably deserves more stars if not using HDMI, nice that audio worked through HDMI right after installing drivers and no SPDIF cables required...

The card performed nicely but after 15 months, the fan broke and the card immediately fried. The fan itself is very cheaply built.

Don't buy PNY products. I found out the hard way that their warranty support is non existent. My 4 month old video card is now in the trash can. Card worked great until the cheap fan died. Beware that if a PNY card goes bad they will only honor the warranty if you have the original packaging. They will also refuse to honor the warranty if the card is no longer being manufactured. Stay away from PNY if you want a warranty.

I bought this card and initially it worked pretty well (aside from the NVIDIA drive mess) however, after about 8 months it died. No big deal I guess, but I wasn't thrilled about having to pay an extra $8 to ship it in. After all it was suppose to be a cheep card for an HTPC. After WEEKS of it being gone I finally received it back only to discover that they had sent me a version with active cooling (as opposed to the passive cooling model I initially had) and worse yet it immediately started having problems with the HDMI interface. PNY then wanted me to ship it back in again at my expense.
I ended up just scrapping it and got an ATI card instead.

this card works well and in a win 7 64 bit system works 20-30% better.
not a needy card either works perfect on a 300w supply fan is ok, I have a fan that goes right above the card fan to suck more heat out. this card works fine at around 70c I don't care to exceed that until I want to kill my system, it is about 35-40 at idle. this card does not support aero so windows will tell you it is crap this is a lie windows is made by Microsoft who know absolutely nothing about graphics just look at there integrated junk. "that they rate higher than this card" left4dead2 works good hl2 smooth as silk oblivion is ok same fallout 3 some older games are not supported at all this is common. if you see this for 75$ buy it it is worth it if it is 100$ don't unless you really need it.

windows 7 ultimate x64
4gb ddr2 800mhz msi mobo/ amd x2 athlon @3ghz windows experience before 2.1 now 5.1 Installing is very simple just drop it in and tighten the screw. On windows 7 it automatically downloaded the driver from windows update and didn't use the cd at all. Before I was using the onboard graphics and GTA4 could not run at all it was all choppy. Now The game runs smoothly and I can even use some of the higher settings. The cool thing is that this card can also accelerate CUDA enabled programs such as coreAVC and SETI@home among others which I have not used as of yet..

Easy Upgrade, Great Price,
This review is from: PNY GeForce GT 220 1024 MB PCI-Express 2.0 DVI with HDMI and VGA Graphics Card VCGGT2201XEB (Personal Computers)
My girlfriend's Video Card blew up, so I got this card as a quick fix.
The old card was a 256MB, so this is a great upgrade and a great price. Upon doing a little research, I found that a few months ago this card used to sell for $130+. The installation was super easy. (It always help to have a larger PC case). I haven't noticed a huge boost in performance, but she doesn't play many games. However, it seems to handle day-to-day use just fine. The fan is a little loud, but it's a rather quiet PC. It's not unbearable or anything. If you watch a movie or listen to music, it's not going to bother you. I would recommend this card for anyone who needs a fast mostly inexpensive video card upgrade. I've purchased from [...] in the past and they're always great! Thanks! |
