What does 10MB/s speed performance and Class 10 mean for me?
PNY's Class 10 cards are rated at 10MB/s, offering much higher performance than standard Class 4 cards.
Smartphone/Tablet users: The Class 10 card will allow you to store more apps and other programs/media files that eat up valuable space on your device's internal memory while enhancing your smartphone's overall performance. Class 10 cards provide users with faster storage to transfer large amounts of files quickly between a mobile device and PC.
Action Camera users: This card's 10MB/s read and write speed performance will help you capture more action shots in a variety of settings. These cameras require ultra-fast cards in order to enhance your video's quality, and PNY offers the performance you need. Feel confident you're getting all the action with PNY's high speed MicroSDHC cards.
What is Class 10 Speed Rating?
The SD Association has created and defined multiple speed classes to help you identify speed and performance capabilities/minimum requirements of MicroSD/MicroSDHC/MicroSDXC cards and their host products. Speeds are reflected in megabytes per second (MB/s).
|Class Rating||Device||Minimum Guaranteed Write Speed|
| ||4MB/sec - Ideal for photos and video|
| ||10MB/sec - Ideal for high quality photos, video, apps and games|
| ||10MB/sec - Ideal for HD photos or video, apps and games|

I benchmarked this PNY card upon its arrival, using the "Flash Memory Toolkit v2.0". Its read speed is consistently high at 14-18MB/s. But its write speed is strongly dependent on the file size:
- For smaller files of 2-5MB, its write speed is very poor at just 3-5MB/s
- For larger files of 10-15MB, its write speed improves to about 8MB/s
(See the performance chart I uploaded to 'Customer Images' section for details)
Next, I tested the same card using "H2testw v1.4". This program measures the sequential read/write speed for 1GB files. Under this test, the PNY card achieved write speed of 9.5MB/s and read speed of 18MB/s.
I repeated the above tests on two different computers using two card readers, and obtained consistent results. Just for reference, I have previously benchmarked the PNY Professional 16 GB Class 10 SDHC Card (P-SDHC16G10-EF) under identical conditions. It was able to achieve write speed of 13.6MB/s and read speed of 18.5MB/s. So the problem is not with my setup.
For a card to be marketed as 'Class-10', it must be able to deliver a MINIMUM write speed of 10MB/s.Read more ›
I gave this card 2 stars because it has decent read speed, but it was unable to meet the Class-10 specification, which (I think) should have a minimum write speed of 10MB/s.
I performed the write/read tests on the following computers/readers: Acer i3/Win7 laptop with built-in SD card reader, Dell Studio Quad core/Vista with a multi-reader, a Sandisk SD/MS reader, and a tiny generic black microSD reader (less than a buck from Meritline). I did not notice any difference in performance when used with or without the SD adapter.
My only other class-10 card is the 32GB SD card from Centon that I used with a Canon M300 HD camcorder. This card gives me at least 18MB/sec write and 22MB/sec read speed. However, this Centon card only works with the Sandisk reader and the reader on Dell computer. The reader on my Acer i3 laptop could not read this card.
I paid a premium for this PNY miroSD card (more than what I paid for the Centon) hoping for a a similar read/write performance, but I did get it. I'm returning the card.
Writing speed: 9.09 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.6 MByte/s
When used with my ContourHD camera, 720p60 clips seem to stutter when playing right out of the camera. Videos are ok when extracted to the hard disk, but I have yet to fill upthe card with videos so more usage is needed to conclude on the card's long term stability.
The main reasons I bought this was because of the high speed, high storage at a relatively low price. Of course, I was hoping that it can deliver, but the current results are pretty decent. Also, this might be a limitation of either my card reader or USB port, so I'll give the card the benefit of the doubt. It was also on discount at $59.99, which makes it an even better buy.
I would be hesitant to believe in the the advertising on the packaging. There is a Sandisk lookalike marking which states that this is a Class 10 card that delivers 15mb/s write speed**. I am not sure if that is really possible, so perhaps other buyers can share their experiences with this card.
Lastly, the packaging on my card comes with a free movie download from the PNY website. You can choose 1 out of the 35 or so movies, which was a pleasant surprise since it wasn't stated anywhere on the product page that this comes with a free movie download. The card also comes with the adapter as shown, which is a great help to maintain when using normal SDHC card readers.
I would have given it 4.5 if Amazon allowed. This card is so close to getting the full 5 if not for the slight speed difference that I got from my card.
