Product Description

This is the deck that started it all! This is the basic 2-player Pokemon collectible card game starter set. It is a great way to get into the game inexpensively. This deck is good for 2 people to learn and play the game!

Amazon.com

Gotta catch 'em all! But before you decide, try out the Pokémon 2-Player Starter Set. You'll get 60 Pokémon trading cards, plus a bonus foil super card, 10 damage counters, and complete rules for this fast-paced game. The deck is meant to be split into two, 30-card minidecks (listed in the rules) to learn the game, but they can be combined into one regular deck as well. Players compete to bring out their combatant cards to the table, and power them up for battle with energy cards. Whoever wins the game is the champion Pokémon trainer! It's never the same game twice; myriad card patterns abound, so it'll take a long time for the challenge to wear thin. --Rob Lightner

I've gotta disagree with the not-for-kids-under-10 comment. My nephews started playing Pokemon using this set way back when they were little--I mean, 5 and 7, something like that. A grownup needs to read the rules and teach them how to play ... then they're off and running. At first they'd come find grownups to read the attack info and help them with difficult rule points, but pretty soon they had the cards down 100%. It was incredible. They actually learned to read in part by playing Pokemon ... and they got lightning fast at multiplying by 10s, subtracting and adding by 10s, etc. When an adult would play with them they were much faster at working the math (skipping steps to get the final result), and they NEVER made a mistake.

My beef with the game is the sales of small packs. Little kids are pathologically optimistic. Every time they spent their money on a pack they thought they were going to get exactly the card they wanted. When they didn't, well ... sometimes there were tears. They felt ripped off. So grownups have to be prepared to set firm rules on what the kids can spend on cards and talk them through the disappointments.

With that caveat, though ... this was the first strategy game they were really interested in. They learned a ton from it. As far as educational value goes, there's nothing in the world that compares to that 100% all-out I-love-it energy kids bring to their favorite things.

We live in a Pokemon world. We do. Just accept it.

For those fond of nostalgia, this is a great buy.

I remember being young and naive, having my parents
buy me this starter set several times.

Why? Because I thought I'd get new cards every time.
Upon buying this just recently, I noticed that it stated very
clearly that each starter set contains the "SAME" cards.
That silliness aside, it was great to have this in my hands again.

I've recently set out on a conquest to collect all of the first 151 Pokemon - original cards only.
I had many cards come through my hands throughout my childhood, and
I would love to relive that rush of excitement I had every time I came face-to-face
with a new card. The new Pokemon (and new cards) are nothing compared to the
originals.

My story aside, this is a great way to secure a few of the standard Pokemon cards.
If you're on the same mission as I am, start with this and then buy the first-edition, foil "Booster Packs"
in order to catch 'em all.

My son has been getting into a lot of the Pokémon games for the Nintendo DS. I told him that there was a card game that we could play together and he was willing to try it. It has become one of our favorite father and son "hobbies". We play several times a week. The rules are easy to learn, and it plays pretty fast. So you can get several games in during one session.

If you're looking for a fun game, especially one that can bring parent and child together, this is a good option.

It appears they are no longer producing these cards. It is a good starter set for anyone interested in Pokemon. I bought this set for my 7 year old daughter to trade and collect. She loves reading the details on each one of the characters.

The box was greatly preserved and all the contents were in their original packaging. Also, the delivery time was even shorter than the estimate.

All in all, an excelent purchase.

These starter sets are pretty nice. They appear now to be pretty rare so I plan on keeping my sealed for awhile. These are still good for the fans of Pokemon, anyone still collecting the cards, or anyone who wants to get started in the once (and I guess still) Pokemon phenomenon. I must admit the cards are cool to look at especially the holographic ones. If I'm not mistaken this set contains a holographic card. As they say... "Gotta catch em all!"

I bought this back in 2012 when I started to collect Pokémon stuff again. I stopped collecting in 2013. I found this item useful. Not much else I can say. This was made back when Wizard of The Coast was still doing Pokémon cards.
